Hi everyone,

So I'm the market for some RGB case fans that I can use Aura Sync to control the colors. I came across CM MasterFan MF122R RGB on the CM website and they looked interesting. But I can't seem to be able to find any information about them on the net. Has anyone used these before? If so can anyone point me to a place where I can buy these(preferably in Asia).

Thanks...

"If you go with our kit you can daisy chain two strips off the included Y-Cable actually which is 50cm in length in total.
The solo extension is 5cm in length though.
You can cut our LEDs, but it will remove the ability to daisy chain the strips. (Included photos of the cut lines for you)
We are also going to be launching extension kits for our LEDs which will be a 10cm extension, and a 30cm extension - I don't have an ETA on when those will go live on the site yet though, sorry.
For reference though, our foam LEDs are end of life and we only offer the LEDs in Magnetic now (our hybrid LEDs are an exception though as those are both magnetic and foam backed)."

That was the reply I got from CableMod. I don't think going for a LED kit which is more expensive comparing to the LED strip (https://store.cablemod.com/product/cablemod-addressable-led-strip-rgb/?attribute_pa_length=12-inch-30-cm) which all I need. I have asked CableMod to see if I can get a Y-Cable with the LED strip and waiting for a reply. I'm putting on hold the case interior lighting for the moment. I can do that in the future since I'm getting a Hue+. Maybe when I'm rich again I will buy an extension kit for Hue+ 😀 😀

In the meantime I went on eBay and found this
https://www.ebay.com/itm/2Pin-4Pin-LED-Strip-Light-RGB-Cable-Adapter-Clip-Connector-Wire-3528-5050-5630/282937516259?hash=item41e063e0e3:m:mbvJbSTuwsKdGP3pj58jH9g

Will this solve my extension cable issue?

Well, that depends which one you go for since selection there is wide. And also where you plan to put that extension in the setup.

Oh, if you haven't noticed, the one you linked above is uncommon 3-pin LED strip while most LED strips and extension cables are 4-pin ones (including CableMod widebeam LED strip).

That's the one i'm going for. It's a 10mm 4 pin RGB 5050 1m extension.(This is the picture eBay shows when I select the options) I'm guessing that will be ok. Cablemod said that they'll be launching 10cm and 30cm extension cables for the LED strips but they don't know when. This extension cable will be used with the Widebeam LED strip to replace the accent light strip in the case. Please help me out with how to connect everything together from the LED strip to the RGB header if this cable is good for the job.

That cable will do fine. Though, since it has white sleeving and most PC cases are black at the inside, it catches an eye like a sore thumb. The one i linked above has black sleeving and it would be hard to spot within the PC case. As far as connecting them, it isn't hard. Just make sure you plug cables in where arrows are facing each other. CableMod LED strip should also have some instructions with it so you know which LED strip is the positive side and needs to match up with the arrow. And from MoBo side, the holy bible of PC's (aka MoBo manual) has that answer.

Haha well I had the same exact thought when I saw the white cable for the first time. I'm pretty sure I'll do something to make the cable black or I'm purchasing some black and white cable extensions from CableMod so there will be more and hopefully enough white inside the case.

1. Connect the RGB cable included with your ASUS motherboard to the AURA header
2. Connect the ASUS Compatibility Adapter to your RGB cable.
3. Connect the other end of the ASUS Compatibility Adapter to your RGB LED Strip
4. Done!

Those are the instructions given in the CableMod website for connecting the LED strip to the RGB header. So if I'm correct the extension cable goes between step 2 and 3 right?

PS: Just noticed something. Step 1 it says to connect the RGB cable included with your Mobo. I didn't get a cable like that with my Mobo(Asus Prime Z370-A). Will that be an issue??

Extension cables usually go between LED strips. Bud depending on your preferences, you can put them between your MoBo and LED strip as well (e.g if you need to route your LED strip further away).

As far as CableMod guide goes, that's widespread and not all MoBos that have RGB header come with a RGB cable.

So me not having a RGB cable won't be an issue right? and how can I connect to the Mobo if I don't have a RGB cable?

As for the extension cable, my suggest placement will work out right?

Any proper RGB header on the MoBo should have 4 pins, just like fan header but they are placed a bit further apart and can be a bit longer as well than fan header pins.

It doesn't matter where you put the extension cable along the chain, LED strips work regardless, provided you lined up arrows properly.

So that means I can connect the RGB adapter that comes with the CableMod LED strip to the Mobo RGB header right?(given that I don't have a RGB cable)

I dropped an email to CableMod just in case. And it seems the Asus ROG Mobos come with the RGB cable and some of them have both RGB headers and Addressable RGB headers. I'm assuming that I can connect addressable LED strip to a normal RGB header and still use it:??:

So turns out my Mobo RGB header is not an addressable one so no go on the CableMod LED strips(Unless I buy a full LED kit).

But I came across this: http://www.coolermaster.com/case/case-accessories/universal-led-strip-rgb/
I can use that for my interior lighting. I was told that I can use the CM RGB Splitter (http://www.coolermaster.com/cooling/cooling-rgb-accessories/1-to-3-rgb-splitter-cable/) to connect this to the Mobo.

If this is achievable (you need to help me on that please), can I use the remaining to connections to connect another LED strip from any brand and make a connection to my Mobo? If so then are there any LED strips I use with this? Please let me know.

Thanks...

As far as addressable goes, that doesn't cover MoBo RGB header but instead LED strip. Difference between addressable LED strip and non-addressable LED strip is that with addressable LED strip, you can control the color of each LED while with non-addressable LED strip, all LEDs show the same color.

I take that you didn't read your MoBo manual. This is good time to read it, page 1-23,
link: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1151/PRIME_Z370-A/E13271_PRIME_Z370-A_UM_WEB.pdf

Your MoBo RGB header supports any 4-pin LED strip, be it addressable one or non-addressable one.

Well guilty as charged. :)

Jokes aside, the CableMod addressable LED strips have a 5V 3-pin connector so any way I won't be able to use that right? I got the information from CableMod itself when I asked about the LED strips. They have recommended the 4pin Widebeam LED strips and I have asked them if I get just a strip rather than getting the full kit. Awaiting for a reply on that.

What do you think about my idea of using the Cooler Master RGB Splitter cable as an extension for the LED strips? I saw pictures of the cable been connected to the Mobo directly and CM has not specified if we can use any product with it. But in theory it should work with anything right? Anything 12V and 4pin that is.

The CableMod 3-pin LED strip comes with an adapter to connect it to MoBo that has 4-pin RGB header. Don't tell me that you even didn't look the product pictures/info of CableMod's 3-pin LED strip that you linked above.

Btw, the idea to use Cooler Master 3-way RGB splitter wasn't yours, it was mine. I brought it up in my 2nd reply in your topic (scroll up and read it). At that time, Cooler Master's 3-way RGB splitter wasn't good enough for you. Though, any 4-pin RGB capable product, be it the RGB fan LED wire or LED strip should work with it without issues.

MERGED QUESTION
Question from blackd51th : "Can I connect any LED strip through a CM RGB Splitter Cable?"

Ok first of all my apologies for the little mishap with the RGB splitter comment. I see that you have mentioned it earlier in the post and I also see that I have replied to that comment with the reply for the comment you made about the Asian store for the CM fans which started this whole thread. That gave you the hint that I'm not interested in that product. My sincere apologies for that.

I did look at the pictures and all of those seem to have 3pins plus the CableMod comment on my RGB header kind of threw me off balance. But nevertheless now that the air is clear on everything. So disregard the brand(NZXT, Phanteks etc.) I can connect any LED strip to the RGB Splitter cable.

Again my apologies for the mishaps. You have been a great help for me since day one and I learned a hell of a lot from you. I meant no disrespect in any way and I hope you will continue helping me out with this. Seems buying a PC is easier than putting lights in it. 😀 😀 😀

You're welcome. :)

In PC hardware, there are a lot of difficult tasks that you may even don't know about. One thing is buying a PC as separate components while fitting everything into the budget. Then comes the PC assembly which can be a headache on it's own. Unless you buy a prebuilt PC. Also, tuning/modding PC can be another headache since getting everything together as needed may not work out in one go. But all in all, i love dealing with PC hardware and i like helping out others with the knowledge and experience i've accumulated over past 20+ years.

And that is the reason my good sir us noobs can always count on tom's hardware and the great team of experts. I added more tags to this thread so that it will pop up in more searches and I'll change the name of the thread as well in the future.

So NZXT 140mm Aer with Hue+ for fans (https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.18.3116155b3kFK6D&id=540855854972&ns=1&abbucket=6#detail)
CableMod Addressable LED strip for front case accent light (https://store.cablemod.com/product/cablemod-addressable-led-strip-rgb/)
CM universal RGB LED strip for interior case lighting (http://www.coolermaster.com/case/case-accessories/universal-led-strip-rgb/)

Any thoughts on my shopping list?

Yes. So the CM light strip goes to one connection on the RGB Splitter, CableMod's Asus goes to the other and all into the Mobo RGB header. All one big happy family. 😀 😀
