I have been using my current computer for 5 years. Until recently, my pc's responsiveness is much slower. For example, opening apps, opening chrome tabs, playing videos that stutters or after a game. My computer starts to lag and everything is less responsive. My cpu is i7-6700 and gpu is GTX 970.

Solution
Hey there,

No, older gen won't make much of a difference. More often or not it comes down to the OS for general lag/unresponsiveness. If you don't re-install windows every year or two, it just bloats up with files, drivers, software etc. The system can feel really laggy. For an easy fix, I'd re-install Windows which would be pretty snappy then.

Your CPU/GPU are getting on, but are still very relevant. If you haven't already, you might look at re-pasting thermal paste on your CPU, check that all your fans are clean and running okay. Some simple PC housekeeping.

You can run programs like HWMon/info to watch your hardware on the fly. This might indicate if there are Hardware issues.

Oh really? For me, I also recently upgraded from a 1080p monitor to a 1440p monitor. Before I switched, my system was working fine. After the switch, all the lag and responsiveness issues started occurring.

I have re-applied thermal paste as well as general PC housekeeping so I don't think that is the issue.

But Thanks a lot for the info!

I have 32GB Ram and an ssd too
I might re-install windows in the worst case
But thanks for the info!

No problem, glad to help! In terms of the monitor situation, although switching to a higher res monitor increases the load on the CPU/GPU, the system shouldn't feel laggy because of the switch.

Now if you were playing demanding games at 1440p, then yes, your CPU/GPU combo might struggle, which could cause games to lag, drop FPS etc.
