Does higher resolution mean more detail

Hello everyone, I'm looking to buy a new monitor in the future, and i was wondering about what exactly higher resolution offers. My two main considerations right now are a 40 inch 4k monitor, or a 27 inch korean 1440p monitor. My main question is: will a higher resolution add more detail to a game;will someone with a higher resolution see more? Is there any significant advantage to having a higher resolution monitor that I may not have considered? Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Higher resolutions can give sharper images, but at increased performance costs.

Ingame, YES. I myself have a 1440p 27" monitor and it gives you a sharper overall view. it's the same as comparing a 720p display to a 1080p. You do have to use a GPU that is up for the job. As far as I know no GTX 980 is up for 4k @ 60fps gaming.
