Does KMS activation need ongoing internet connection?

I understand that a KMS activator needs internet connection in order to activate windows or office. But what about afterward? Does the computer need to connect to the internet every 180 days, in order to renew activation?
Or can it remain permanently offline?

It goes without saying that I am not condoning illegal use of key management systems, nor am I planning on using it myself. The question is a theoretical one.
