Question Does leaving the laptop without charging for a period of time affect the battery?

I have a laptop that I don't use. I only charge it when the battery is low. Does not using it harm the laptop battery?

Left too long the battery may self discharge to a level that kills it. This time period varies from battery to battery but anything more than 3 months or so should be avoided.
