Hi All,

Does my motherboard ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 supports PCIe NVMe SSD (M.2 PCIe SSD Adapter Card to PCI-E x4) as boot device ? or PCIe AHCI version?
Current ASUS BIOS version - 2701 (AMI Version - 2.10.1208).

Am planning to buy Samsung 950 Pro 256GB M.2 NVM Express SSD or equivalent which is NVMe and not AHCI.

Solution
Will it work ?? Likely yes.

Absolutely not worth the outlay though when you're going to be massively restricted on speeds because your board only has a PCI express 2x4 slot spare.

You're not going to see any faster performance than a standard 850 evo ssd which will be just over 1/3 of the price.

Solution
I think the specifications for an x4 slot is 2 gb/s which is a lot faster then 600 mb/s which has sata 3 port ( 20 gbs compared to 6 gbs) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express#PCI_Express_2.0. As you can see from the specification of pci-e 2.0 it can support 500 mb/s per each lane, that means 500 mb/s per lane X 4 lanes will result in a 2 gb/s speed. Yes Op it will work like a charm dont worry and it will be much faster then a sata 3 port.

Thanks madmatt30, If I can able to install the OS in PCIe NVMe SSD and boot from it with the above motherboard configuration am fine with PCIe NVMe SSD.

Thanks Dragos, Since my system board don't have M.2 slot, can you please suggest a good M.2 PCIe SSD Adapter Card?

Thanks madmatt30, I purchased SM950 Pro 256 GB and installed Linux Mint 18 on it. It worked PCIe SSD NVMe as boot devices.

Thanks all again ...
