I have a msi B85M-E45 motherboard, currently fitted with 2x4 RAM(Crucial DDR3 Ballistix 1600Mhz 8GB KIT), so can I simply buy an identical pair and put them in the remaining slots to upgrade from 8GB to 16GB?

Solution
Your board supports a maximum of 32GB so you can populate each slot with 8GB sticks. I hope you can source an identical kit(regardless of the serial numbers matching) since mixing and matching rams only leads to hair pulling time. Before doing any upgrades, make sure you're on the latest BIOS update for your motherboard.
