Does my motherboard support i3 6100?

Solution

Yes, but those CPUs might not work for you. Not all socket 1156 CPUs work all MBs, especially on pre-built PCs where the power available to the CPU is often limited.

As said above, READ the supported CPU list for your MB or pre-built PC. Get on the correct BIOS version before you do the CPU swap.

Here is a list of possible CPUs for socket 1156: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1156

IF your PC or MB supports it an i5-680 is a good choice. $60 on ebay.

Here is an example of how to compare CPU strength: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-680-vs-Intel-Core-i3-540

Your mobo has a lga 1156 socket, the cpu you want needs a mobo with a lga 1151 socket
the socket is where the cpu goes in.

The motherboard and CPU work together. When there is a change where the old MB can't support the new CPU they create a new SOCKET number. Only CPUs that run in your socket have a chance of being supported by your MB, then you need to check the MB's supported processor list.

I3-6100 is a different socket then your MB, so it cannot be supported by your MB. Your MB is a socket 1156.

If you bought an already assembled PC from Dell or HP or other maker then look at the "CPU Upgrades" for that PC. It's possible that you will find a supported upgrade to an i5 or i7 based on power (wattage) draw through the MB.

If you bought a MB rather than a pre-assembled system your motherboard will have a "supported CPUs" list. Google for it. This is the list of the CPUs that the BIOS on your MB supports. and CPU and built your own PC then there are several good upgrade choices likely moving from the i3-540 to an i5 or i7.

look also at this thread: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2329594/cpu-recommended-lga1156-socket.html

Then look at getting a refurbished PC based on current parts.

Unless you are buying used parts really cheap on ebay, upgrading a system based on socket 1156 does not make a lot of sense. Too many old parts.

Do you think a 680 could run today's games with basic settings? (Paired with RX 480)
