Good afternoon!
I would like to upgrade my CPU and at first I was about to buy a 4790 since I dont wanna spend a lot of money on new rams mobo and cooler , but now I found xeon e3 1231v3 for a good price, now i think it should fit my h87 motherboard, but its not listed in the list of supported cpus.
The tdp of cpu is lower than what my motherboard supports, and its the same socket.
I have already upgraded psu and gpu so u dont need to be worried about the crappy psu there, but my question is: Would there be any problem putting xeon in that mobo?
Heres a link to mobo specs https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03885123

Solution
The chipset should allow E3-1231V3 but the motherboards needs a correct BIOS or BIOS update to do that.

According to the link you gave us, No! your mobo should not be supporting than Xeon.

I would however send a support request directly to HP for that question for a definite answer.
If you are lucky, perhaps there is a BIOS update for what you wanna do.
