Hey guys

so i'm here arguing with my dad...
He is saying that my PC will always consume the same amount of energy, the one that my PSU have regardless what i do with my PC surf on the internet or Render Videos.

So my question is he right and it doesn't matter what i do with my PC, it will always consume the same amount of watts?

My system specs are:
XFX 750w Core Edition
I5 3570k
Gtx 680
Asrock extreme4
8gb Ram Gskill

If need more info ask for it 😉

An example to show your dad that he is wrong.

No, your pc will not consume the same amount of energy. A watt meter at the wall can tell you how much total watts you consume based on what you are doing. There are lots of youtube videos of people showing this, to compare idle power draw and load power draw.

This is because things like speedstep (Intel cpu) and the fact all video cards have a 2d mode that runs it at a lower speed using less power.

An example video from youtuber, you can see his watt meter.

Parents can be stubborn, I remember arguing with my dad when I got into overclocking. He insisted I would burn up and destroy everything. He also said that you couldn't change voltage through a bios, that it always required manual jumpers and always would. Which is funny because he should have known better, he is an electrical engineer.

This is also the reason I bought the motherboard I did when I built my pc, it supports offset voltages. So my cpu can scale from 1600mhz @ 1.0v to 4.7ghz@1.3

Edit: Convincing your parents with replys from TomsHardware might be hard, google information about PSU power efficiency and specs. You can find specs about power draw range etc.

Good luck with that! If he's anything like my Mom, he will seek out the one site that will agree to what he says. In my Mom's case she decided to use ask.com, lol. Then I showed her about 10 reputable sites saying otherwise, and she stuck to her guns that the yahoo that didn't know anything was right over trusting the professionals. Maybe that's just a Mom thing though, and not so much a Dad thing, lol.
