Does plugging in an HDMI cable into my HDTV with an xbox 360 give it true 1080p?

My friend told me that I won't receive 'true' 1080p resolution on my xbox 360, despite having an HDMI cable plugged into my xbox 360 and into an HDMI 1080p TV.

I don't believe him because I have seen a significant difference on far cry 3 with and without the HDMI cable.

Can someone clear this up please and tell me if it is 1080p or not?

The cable doesn't give you anything beyond a means for the data to reach the tv from the source being the Xbox 360.
HDMI cables are capable of showing up to 4k and lower resolutions.

But here is the deal the majority of the games on xbox 360 arent 1080p when I say the majority we are talking over 95% of the games have a native resolution below 1080p (1920x1080) but the system either via software, or the GPU upscale the game to make it 1080p. Although it does a decent job an upscale will never look as good as true 1080 of the same content.

So to answer you question does plugging a HDMI into your system give you 1080P? The answer is No. Does plugging in an HDMI give you the capability to use a 1080p source? The answer to that is YES...

Far Cry 3 resolution on the Xbox 360 is only 1280x704 thats a Far Cry from 1920x1080 <---- Ha see what I did there lol.

So what do you suspect the resolution to be increased to? because there is a very noticeable difference between using an HDMI cable and not using one.

What cable were you using before? The highest resolution possibly with the component cables is 1080i, at least that was the original standard, it's possible they've upgraded the capabilities since then. You also lose some resolution with the change from digital to analog.

The cable I was using before was simply the xbox 360 cable which doesn't go anywhere near 1080p, so I switched it out with the HDMI cable.

I don't do analog or digital, it's either AV2 (for the xbox without the cable) or HDMI/DVI (for when I do have the cable)

how many plugs did you have into your tv? 1,3 or 5? If you only had one video cable running then you had composite video which is maxed at 480i. If you had three video cables then you had component which was originally limited to 1080i on the first couple generations of 360s. Both of those connections are analog and won't look as crisp as the HDMI which is digital.

No, it doesn't work like that, we're talking about the xbox 360 here, not the xbox one. None of the 360 games come close to 1080p. Not only that, I already used far cry 3 as an example.

EAJuggalo:

I have one for the xbox 360 power supply, and one for the HDMI cable. Is what you're saying even relevant anymore? I have a black xbox 360 so I suppose it's just the 'newer' version, but the HDMI cable didn't come with the 360 it was used for something else now I just use it for the 360.

No, hardly any games run at 1080p. I don't have any borderlands neither do I intend to. A few Borderlands games does not correlate to "Plenty of 360 games run at 1080p." It doesn't answer my question either, so can I ask you how much is the xbox 360 resolution going to be if I have an HDMI cable and HDTV running at 1080p. Will I get 1080p? Or an upscaled version to 1080p which won't be as good as 1080p natively?

That can't be right because far cry 3 looks completely different in terms of optimal resolution with the HDMI cable. What you said also contradicts what Neog2 said about upscaling the game and that it will improve the resolution, but not to the degree of a native 1080p resolution. Mate if you don't know what you're talking about then don't say anything on this thread.

What I said and what Nwog2 said is EXACTLY the same. I just didn't explain it well. Games will upscale, but even when updcaled the game is still native to the lower res and will not look like true 1080p. Also you never said what cables you used before HDMI. This will help us understand what you are coming form.

Did you have three cables (white, red, yellow) connected, or 5 cables (red, blue, green, white, red(2nd))?

I already told you that the cables I was using was the xbox 360 cables so the first one im pretty sure. But since then I've replaced it with the HDMI cable.

Good so you agree with Neog2, that will be enough to sum it all up.

I know, thanks for the help, and everyone else too.
