Does plugging into Wifi router from modem slow down subsequent wired connection?

Right now I have my regular modem (Surfboard 6121) plugged into my wireless router (Belkin AC750 DB) and then run a separate ethernet cord from the wireless router to my desktop machine. With this setup, I get around 45 Mbps on the desktop. Today I plugged in the desktop directly to the Surfboard modem and am getting 120+ Mbps.

Is this difference in speed normal or do I need to get a better Wifi router? Is there a better way to set this up so I can get the faster speed on the wired connection for the desktop while also having the Wifi router plugged in?

There are two options:

You probably should get a new router, becuase clearly your router is pretty outdated and really slowing your LAN connection.

Otherwise you could just have the ethernet from the modem go to a switch, and from that switch have a cable going to your router, and another cable going strait to your system, and not being part of your routers LAN. This is a pretty bad idea because first of all, your computer wont be part of you lan, and also it is very insecure, but this is a $10 fix if you really want to put yourself out there.

Well your WIFI router shares the bandwidth so if there is high WIFI activity, it will slow things down. Ideally though, you shouldn't use the ethernet port on the WIFI router, they put it there to entice you, hey ethernet ports built-in, BUY ME! You should really use a dedicated gigabit ethernet switch wired directly to the modem, is not that expensive.

You do not want to be connected directly to the WAN. You want to be on a router inside a lan for security. There is little to no security on a modem.
