Does QOS work on a second router?

My first router connects to the internet which doesn't have QOS. Everyone in my house connects to the second router (first router is connected to the second router), where the second router has the QOS feature. If I use QOS on my second router, will the QOS feature work?

Someone told me you can only use QOS from the first router cause it's connected to the internet? Is this true?

Solution

QoS is normally used to give Internet bandwidth priority to certain devices over others, although some routers do give advanced control when allocating bandwidth. Since Internet access for a router is provided via the WAN port, control of Internet bandwidth can't be provided when configured as an AP (WAN port not used).

Because routers vary widely in how QoS is implemented, you should refer to your owner's manual to find the specific capabilities of your particular model.

QoS can be used to control bandwidth of wired and wireless devices.

As long as all devices only connect to the second router, and the second router's WAN port is connected to the first router, then QoS should work fine.

The problem is having two routers configured in this manner creates a double NAT issue, which will negatively affect some apps (e.g. online gaming, VoIP, Skype).

It will work as long as.... everybody gets to the Internet via the second router, as you stated, then fine.

Somewhere in your QOS setting... there should be a place where you tell it what's the max bandwidth of your Internet.... because if QOS merely going by the ethernet port speed.... u see why what wouldn't work. :)

Connect through WAN port? It doesn't work when I do so. I have it connected (both routers) to each LAN port.

QoS only works through WiFi, not Ethernet right?
