Does simply running Furmark harm a gpu?

I know that if the temps get too high then the gpu will get harmed, but I'm asking if simply running furmark will harm a gpu?

Furmark will do things that no game will ever do, and it does it on purpose to make it worker as hard as physically possible. However, all the manufacturers consider it a heat virus, as it goes out of its way to push a GPU harder than any game ever would as it does things that make no sense in practical use.

The act of running it under controllable temps won't harm a GPU, but you could overheat a GPU and cause harm. Newer cards and their drivers control the temps by down clocking if they get too hot, so it isn't really a big concern.

Often most after using fur mark or such to "stress test" my gpu after a aggressive over clock to what is deem to be stable, my system would freeze or crash shortly after playing games like crisis 3! So running fur mark is only step one and they will not damage your gpu as long as temperature is under control.

furmark is a horrible test of stability. it makes it run much MUCH harder than it ever would gaming. i ran it before i knew better and my card down clocked a lot to protect itself.
[strike]ATI[/strike] AMD, and nividia have enabled protection in their drivers from furmark. if you try and work around that your a fool.

your better off looping game benchmarks, or just playing for hours on end. i use 'Bioshock Infinite' which pushed my card (670) the hardest out of my games. unstable overclock shows pretty fast. looping 'Into the Pink' for 24hrs is another one i'm fond of but not quite as hard on the card.
