I have a MSI 1080 ti Gaming X, and a buddy of mine just decided to sell off a couple of his 1070s after he decided to stop mining Bitcoin. They're the basic Nvidia brand 1070s, and I was thinking about buying one to run with my 1080 ti, but I have no knowledge on how SLI works and if it's dependent on the GPUs matching exactly. Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated!

Solution
Different brands, yes.
Different chips, no.
In your case... no.

Past that, dual gpu may win synthetic benchmarks, but gameplay is better with a single good card.
Dual gpu is prone to stuttering and screen tearing.
Dual gpu is increasingly not supported in games.

You now have a better option in the upcoming RTX2080ti.
