Question RX 7800 XT is good for 1440p Ultra gaming ?

7800 XT is 120$ cheaper than 4070 Super here. So i wanted to know if its a good buy for max settings gaming, as i see many videos saying it lacks quality upscaling and poor performance with UE5 Games like Wukong, Stalker, Hellblade 2 etc..
I see the new Nvidia cards are selling 2 times the msrp now and i assume it follows the same with the 5070 too and the out of stock issue of most brands and the melting issue.
Will upcoming 90 series be at the same price point, so that i can wait?

Any suggestion would be helpful..

The 7800xt is a good card with performance that sits between the 4070 and 4070 super without ray tracing. There are a lot of reviews out there that are worth looking at to get an idea of the games thay interest you. Look at 1440p settings and what fps you want to hit and see if it suits you. If you look at the latest 5080 reviews from hardware unboxed / techspot or Gamers Nexus and they will show you some good detailed information. If the games you like are not covered then cast the net a bit wider to other sites.

No one knows the prices of the new AMD cards yet - by the looks of it they are waiting to see what the performance of the 5070 and 5070ti comes in at - and then release at a price deemed competitive to them at that stage. All performance figures until actual testing are really unknown.

I expect they will be similar in performance to the nvidia cards and have improved Ray tracing and upscaling performance but again this is just an estimate.

If you can wait then I would personally recommend doing so.

Anyways, the worst part is that AMD and Intel are just copying nvidia, instead of doing things better.

And lets not forget about game studios/developers who launch "alfa" games as final products, and hopes gamers will turn On DLSS to compensate the lack of optimization. Then they also spend several months trying to make it work as a "final" product, while getting our money up front.

Just get the best card you can get with the best warranty and post services, and enjoy gamign with it. And remember to balance your GPU and your CPU, nothing good comes from pairing a super powerfull GPU with a Core i5 from 4 gens ago. So be sure to pay attention to that. Good GPU, means your CPU should also be good, else you are goig to be wasting potential.

Well, I'm interested in 4070 super, but its the price, 12GB VRAM and price per dollar compare with 7800 XT stopping me to get it. Considering current Nvidia 50 series pricing and stock issues, I'm sure the same will happen with 5070 too, doubled the msrp.. but 9070 is far from launch, and i still dont expecting they gonna launch in March. I believe AMD might increase the prices as well because of their Increased ray tracing performance and nvidia's small performance boost from last GEN.. By looking at 6800 xt and 7800 xt having similar performance, i doubt the new GPU have any large increase in Raster perf boost.
So the confusion real..

It's a very good choice for 1440p gaming. Some quality settings may need to be reduced from ultra to high.

Well with the R5 7600 either the RX 7800XT or the 4070 Super are good matches.

I know the feeling, I rather lower some setting down than using DLSS or FSR.
For me, in most games the Very Hgh or Ultra settings don't always represent a huge visual impact for the performance cost, so I usually go on High settings on those AAA titles. I also don't care a lot about shadows, usually set them on medium, specially when playing an action game where you are usually tracking enemies, fighting, defending yourself or jumping obtacles.

In any case, even wih the best system you can put togheter (R7 9800X3D + high speed DDR5), the RTX 4070 Super will only get you about (avg) 50 fps in Black Myth Wukon, and thats with settings at Very High + RT and Quality Upscaling.
So neither of those are cards are awesome, if you are looking for that type of game play, you should instead be looking for a RTX 4080/4080 Super or 4080TI I mean 5080.

Games are becoming a bigger and more disapponited pieces of crap, over and over again, crap that barely works on the very high end hardware available, so we are bascially doomed for now.

I agree with some of what you are saying but I use a 4070 super with a 9900k and the performance is good. Would I get some additional performance with a better CPU - yea but only in some games as at 1440p I am often pegged at 100% GPU usage.

DLSS is actually a great technology - frame generation can also be very useful. Certainly in its current state although I agree the first implementations were not great. When actually playing the majority of games I doubt many people will notice any difference to non DLSS when using the quality settings at 1440p and above. 1080p yes as it will be using 720p or lower.

If I don't need to use it then I won't but if I feel I need the extra fps then I will get it on no worries at all. I wouldn't use it for Warzone for example but a single player game or non competitive online game then no issue.

If you want 1440p high refresh with ultra visuals you either buy a 80 or most likely 90 series card or like the majority of us turn on DLSS. I don't use FSR so I cannot comment directly but whilst there have been huge improvements it seems that it is still not quite in the level of DLSS. It's advantage though is that it isn't proprietary.

I do have an issue though with the 50 series seemingly to be more of a refresh though that will rely it seems on MFG to provide any significant games as it has been shown to provide latency penalties.

I also use an RX 7800 XT for 1440 gaming. I replaced a 3070 with it. I find that most of my titles play North of 120-ish frames at highest settings. I don't actually use the FSR or anything with it as I haven't found a need to with the pure grunt it has. It does NOT compete with the 3070 with RT but otherwise kicks the crap out of it in pure rasterization.

Well, I get your point, for me is exactly the other way around, I enjoy the art, design and graphic fidelity of the landscapes and satructures in games and I don't like the artifacts and latency that DLSS + FG can introduce, so If I can avoid it I don't use it.

Once you experience higher refresh rates then it is hard to go backwards but to get there sometimes I have no issue with using DLSS to give me that boost. I have tested and try some very good high refresh rate monitors, thats why I have been avoiding getting one for my self, theres no turning back.

That said, performance might very well still make it a great value, but again, the only way to know for sure is to wait.

BTW, kind of weird as I'm seeing higher prices and limited stock on 7800 XT and 7900 XT today. Someone tell me if I missed something?

7800xt stock seems to be drying up in the UK from what I can see as well. Prices are OK where they are available though

I myself have a similar ethos. I don't have much like in FG, however, in games like Indian Jones, using FG gives a very smooth experience. The added latency isn't felt as much as it's a single player game that doesn't go too fast anyway. Without FG, my GPU is in the 100-120 fps range. With FG it maxes the monitors refresh at 170hz. Which is also nice. That's the only game I use FG on.

On the other hand, fast paced shooters like BO6 multiplayer, then FG does not help at all. But, DLSS certainly does. I run at 1440p and like my settings high or maxed. For the games I play the 4070 S does an amazing job. But, some games, specially those with UE5 engine really do tax my system. I find I'm having to use DLSS more and more. This is the way! 😉

Indeed, and I think thats part of the issue, you have to start with really good frames so it doesn't sucks (the more real frames vs "magical" frames, the better) . And the RTX 4070S is great card for that.

Yeah it feels that DLSS / FSR is here to support the current situation we are in where a combination of Ray Tracing, new resource heavy engines and, dare I say it, lazy developers, have pushed us past the place where cards are able to keep up with out of the box performance.

As with the AI fascination, Ray Tracing is very much the same and it is only in a few scenarios where it genuinely seems worth it. It is still in its infancy though to be fair and the clever tricks pulled with Raster to create realistic environments has become a sweet science over the years.

UE5 is also in its infancy and hopefully developers will get to grips with it sooner rather than later to be able to extract more for less but for the time being we are we are - utilising these upscaling technologies to bridge the gap. The technologies are getting better and better though which is a good sign but we need them in addition to hardware developments not instead of i think.

Bringing this back to the 7800xt then it is still a good card and FSR will have to be used to bridge any gaps at 1440p certainly. No shame in it. The lackluster Ray Tracing performance is a hindrance though that may not be able to be completely covered off by the upscaling. If FSR4 filters down then great but in my opinion the the new 9070/9070XT doesn't have to change the world. It needs a healthy boost to Ray Tracing performance, continued solid raster and most importantly an attractive price. Releasing it in March seems madness to me but with the poor availability of the 50 series so far it might get away with it.

I would be releasing it now if its ready though and getting ahead of the game rather than always reacting to nvidia's moves. Fingers crossed they stick the landing

In any case the RTX 5xxx series so far are not that great of a gpu, not even in RT performance. As it seems nvidia used more die space for AI computation, than to increase RT performance vs last gen.

In any case those gpus are nowhere to be found, and with those price tags not many average gamers will be interested on them.

Too bad the RX 9XXX launch is on march, I would have loved to see how those cards perform today, not only on rasterization and RT, but also power wise, which is not AMD GPUs strongest point

I used to own a 6800xt which is almost exactly the same performance as the 7800xt.

Here’s the deal. For right now, the 7800xt is like the 6800xt, a high settings 1440p card. If you’re trying to do ray tracing it will do a little but not great.

I would say if you can hold out until amds new gpus arrive that would be good. Myself, I picked up a 7900xtx and while I’m mostly happy with the card sometimes I do wonder if I should have waited. Hopefully amd will bring fsr 4 to at least the 7000 series.

Here’s what you’re going to run into though, look at Indiana Jones and how they required ray tracing in that game. As time goes on count on that being more of a thing. How long before the 7800xt who knows? I would think a while but not sure. That’s the one catch.

There are 4 cards that are worth there price on and and 3 cards worth there price on Nvidia but different reasons.

7800xt
7900 gre ( discontinued but can be found around some outlets rare in USA).
7900xt
7900 xtx

Nvidia 4070
Nvidia 4070 super
Nvidia 4070 ti super.

After that performance is still good but price isnt worth it.

Pros and cons

Nvidia
tends to have better driver support

( I can hear the protests in comments don't care if it worked for you I've had 3 generations of cards and ever single card had 1 driver issue

The excuse was AMD ages like fine wine. Doesn't cut it for me.)

My last was rdna 2 6700xt and I had crashes on desktop. Spent more time diagnosing then gaming. Which was a shame cause when it worked it beat the snot out of Nvidia.



Slimmer coolers on midrange. And tend to be more compact.

Raytracing is better.

Cons

the price
can be abysmal Nvidia ram shenanigans sabotaging own product line to sell the better cards later down line for same price.

Slimmers coolers tend to run hotter.

Linux support is poorer.

Usually cards have very little headroom to get more performance complete pollar opposite of amd.


Amd pros

Faster then raster usually beats Nvidia over the head in terms of normal gameplay.

Better Linux driver support then Nvidia.

Cards tend to last longer due to higher vram.

Decent coolers are rock solid. And usually are alot quieter then Nvidia at least from cards I've owned.

Tends to allow for better tinkering of settings.

Costs less.

Cons.
Falls by the way side when raytracing is used there behind.

Drivers are hit and miss.
Multi monitors tend to draw more wattage then there Nvidia counterparts.

Copy cat features nothing really to call there own I do hope that this changes down the line.

Cons the weight of coolers you may need a separate bracket.

Draws more power.

This is my own experience and other people's experience may vary.
