Does the laptop ram need to match in size?

What are the laptop ram rules? Right now I have a total of 6gbs one is 4gbs and the other is 2gbs. Both are Pc3l 12800S but I thought that the rams have to be the same sizes in order to work properly and same speed too.

It best to read the manual to see what work for your laptop.

That would be to operate as dual channel. The differant size should work fine but only has the full bandwidth under dual channel.
