Can somebody tell me if thermal paste ware's out ?. I put my cpu on in january and was getting temps of 37 under high load now its up to 47 and i'm getting slow down in games, after playing them for a while.

I think that the thermal paste dries up after a while and loses its conductive properties, but I don't think it would happen after less than 1/2of a year. I think you should probably reapply every year. Maybe if you wanted you could try reapplying some Arctic Silver III and see if it helps.

No, it's not going to wear out. The temp increase is probably coming from dust and other particles. You might want to get a can of compressed air and check and see if you can clear some of the gunk out of your fans. Also this is kinda out there but if it's getting warmer this time of year and if the room temps are increased then so will your case temps and your CPU.

Your slowdown in games is more of a OS related problems. Try removing some shareware programs and some of the services running in the background. Defrag your HD...yada yada yada

good luck

Actually thermal grease will dry up and will decrease performance.<A HREF="http://www.mikhailtech.com/articles/cooling/crystalorb/" target="_new">Here</A> it reads:
Running at a core speed of 240mhz my Gainward Ti200 pumps out almost as much heat (if not more) as my Pentium II 300mhz CPU which has a heatsink about five times the size of the Corb. The point of this is that at high temperatures silicon-based grease dries up and decreases performance significantly.
This goes to show that some thermal will dry up if your chip is running too hot. If it's better quality stuff, then it wont. If you didn't apply the thermal grease, then you really can't tell what it is. Maybe try using the compressed air, but if that doesn't work, then maybe try reapplying thermal paste. (get the good stuff, like AS3)

As for the slowdown, I agree with "Pettytheft". It's probably just that you have more programs running in the background, or maybe you have some spyware going. You could download the add-aware thing off of Download.com.

It's probably the warmer temps outside in your area (assuming you live in US) but it could be dust as well. I usually take cotton swabs and clean the cooling fans blades to get most of the heavy stuff off before using compressed air. I usually do this 2 or 3 times a year.

It's a good free program to get it off your system!

Gator is very sneaky. It has pop ups that say would you like to install this download software. Then at the bottom it says in fine print. "gator" Now if you were pissing the night away or really tired you could just click yes to make the pop ups go away. I'm guessing that's how it ended up on my PC last time. Who knows.. Like I said, it's sneaky!
