Does this sound like an overclock issue? Have to clear CMOS for PC to boot...

Hello,

First off here are my specs:
M5A99X EVO R2.0
FX 8320,OC'd to 4GHz with a Noctua NH-D14
R9 270X
8GB, Ares G.Skill
Seasonic 620w PSU

The temps on my CPU are always fine, even under gaming temps don't normally reach 50C, usually mid-high 40's.

Anyway, i have had this PC for almost a year now. Every so many months(probably like 4 months maybe) my PC decides it won't boot. It will power on, but nothing will appear on screen. There will be a red light on near my GPU. The power will stay on until i manually shut the computer off, but absolutely nothing will display on screen, not even the ASUS logo.

Last time this happened i just reset the CMOS and it fired right up with no problem. I reset my OC, and it has been fine for months. A few nights ago it decided not to boot up again. This time, i unplugged it for a bit, probably 20 minutes or so, plugged it back in and it worked fine. Next day, same issue. I just rinsed and repeated. Third day however that didn't work, i reset the CMOS, and it is fine again. I won't know if it is the OC by testing this myself without waiting for months to pass.

Honestly though, i am just going to go back into my OC because i like the performance boost. So i ask, does this sound like something to do with my OC?

Any other info you need to know, or feel i left something out, let me know!

Thanks!

If you want to test your OC, I would reapply the settings you wanted to use, and while it's running correctly, run the usual gauntlet of stresstests again. Prime, Memtest86+, ect. Any high voltages used for your OC? Possible degradation though would seem unlikely in such a short time.

It could be that your CPU degraded over time and now the voltage needs to to be upped (not likely, unless somethings screwy, like LiquidPC said).

Or, your OC is inches away from instability, and it wasn't picked up on.

I'd try upping the voltage a tiny bit and see what happens.

Huh...i didn't get email notifications of these responses...

Anyway, if it is degradation...i won't be going AMD next time. I just upped my OC to 4.3GHz on stock voltage and ran Prime95 for 5 hours. It peaked at 58C, but did not stay or hover at that temp, but my room was very warm as well. 72F+

Anyone think they know why it could be instability that doesn't get picked up on for months? What's up with that?

Have you checked your RAM under stress as well? Is the RED led near your GPU still lit up when your failing to POST? Could just be a voltage setting that isn't quite enough to pass POST on rare occasions. Does it happen when your running stock with no OC? What voltage adjustments have you made so far for your OC?
