Does Windows server OS take machine networking to the next level? HAD IT with smb reinstalls, advanced sharing, permissions, master browsers, sharing every drive to every machine, resetting the network, home groups, making a local machine account after clicking through 7 prompts to create a microsoft account, services.msc, function discovery host, function discovery resource, enable smb direct in firewall, allow network discovery in firewall, map network drive etc. Then doing it all over again when they update windows and disable all this <Mod Edit> I just did. Just getting it to work is miserable. I understand there trying to stop ransomware, wannacrypt, notpetya etc but its a mess. Does windows server have these same limitations or is it a whole new level of networking machines without all this? I know its pricey but i'm loosing my damn mind. I've looked through the forums and I didn't see anything about this, if u could point me to it id appreciate it, and thanks in advance for the help. Tired of fixing networking in windows 10.

If you simply want a share that will work, get a nas or downgrade to xp and make sure it has no Internet access, just lan--it will work great and no fuss.

Oh as far as windows server--it is a bigger mess because I'm sure bad updates will inevitably do the same thing.

I haven’t had any bad updates for any server os personally. And you can disable the update service if you wish, it’s not recommended but you can do it

Server 2019 rules and is extremely fast

Windows Server Essentials 2019 should be more that sufficient. It's essentially the same as full blown windows server 2019, it's much cheaper and unless you have 100+user case in mind there would be no difference. It has same kernel, same patches same updated as the higher editions. As far as getting off the start with WS, there's a bit of learning curve it it as it presumes from administrators a certain degree of familiraty with the ecosystem. Initial install is traditionally fairly barebones, and you need to know what modules and services you need to install and configure to make it fit the services you want to estabilish through it.

As for the your frustrations i have a feeling it has something to do with smb automatically unistalling itself after it hasn't been used for 15 consecutive days. :p

A Windows Server install is MORE work than a Home or Pro install.

And in the hands of someone not quite clued in, possibly MORE vulnerable to outside attacks.

that is very true.

client type editions are like buying a house from real estate developer.
Depending on edition it's it's finished house with either, one garage or two, or 2 + picket fence,
all you really have to do is install a security system, decide on tiles, wallpapers, trimps and furnishings

with server editions regardless of edition
is pretty much like buying a plot of with foundations poured in,
with piles of cement mix, timber, insulation, and bricks sitting on the side to do with as you wish.
