Hello THG.

I have just had something both eye opening and stupid happen to me, let be tell you.

I recently had my 7900GT run @ 80D and fry itself and iam now RMA (replacing it with a MSI 7900GTO)

So i put my old Xpertvision 6600GT in and left the side of my case off.

I ran cool for a couple of weeks then it started to run very hot 85-90 in games and i was very scared so i replaced PSU and alas, temp did not down and it started artifacting so i took a look at the heatsink
images

Dis-assembled it and cleaned it for dust, but by total mishaps i knocked the pop pin out of the PCB and the Heatsink came off,
to my supprise i saw a teaspoon (Yes a teaspoon) of thermal paste all over the Chip and heatsink and die !

So i wipe the thermal past off and apply a pin drop to the actual chip and reassemble it but leaving the aluminum cover off to its just the heat sink and fan.

And what do you know it ran at 55 idle and 65 full load.

Point of story is Xpertvision did a very pore job of applying the thermal paste, because of this i will never buy from them ever again !

So people if your videocards are running extra hot for no reason Please take off the cooler and re-apply thermal paste.

If any of you still have working 7900gt's take the coolers off and get some good thermal paste and re-apply if you want to keep those cards!

Hope this helps anyone who is having Videocard temp issues.

or you also could put a aftermarket zalman cooler on it for 40$?
almost no noise, an cool (especially the LED version)

The stock Xpertvision cooler is silent and runs just fine for now but when i order my New SilverStone TJ04 w/ Antec tricool 12cm fan and Silverstone 500 w (EF50 normal) I will get a Zalman VF 900-Cu (please dont tempt me with the Fatality Bullsh!t please !) i will use that on my 6600GT untill my MSI 7900GTO arrives !

BTW. will the VF900-Cu work on the MSI 7900GTO ?
