Don't know what to do after upgrading CPU.

(PC specs down below, and yes, I'm aware of how outdated they are.)

Hello guys! So I just installed my new processor and immediately after launch (since I have no idea what to do) I started a game to see the fps improvement. However, I've only gotten 5-10 more fps which is weird for the amount of bottleneck I've removed. I checked the device manager, and it's still displaying my old CPU with it's 2 cores. Oddly enough, in a temperature measurement program, I'm seeing the name of my new processor, but only 2 of it's cores (it has 4). Somewhere on the internet I've read about updating your BIOS and stuff, but I'm not sure about that. So, yeah, any help would be appreciated...

PC Specs:

  • CPU: Old- Athlon II x2 250, New- Phenom II x4 945
GPU: GeForce GTX 750 Ti Gigabyte OC 2GB Edition
    Motherboard: MSI GF615M-P33
    RAM: 4 GB DDR3 1333Mhz

Solution
Go into msconfig, select Boot tab, then advanced, and look for number of processors make sure its unchecked. This often happens when a processor (and number of cores) is changed.

I play on 1366x768, and since my budget is ultra-low, I wont be upgrading anything at least until 2017, so currently the cpu is my biggest prob.

I have read about this before but not had it. What I read was sometimes Windows just refuses to recognise your new CPU and extra cores and the only option is to reinstall Windows. Before you do that just check your BIOS is up to date and supports that CPU fully

First, go into the BIOS and load optimized defaults, then save and restart. If the processor is still badly detected(look in task manager and device manager) it's time for a bios update.

In regards to what to upgrade I would just save up to do a full upgrade.
The phenom architecture is very old at this point and anything that is a big enough improvement over the 750 to be worth the cost would be bottlenecked by your CPU.

If you really wanted to upgrade something then memory is dirt cheap right now ($30 for 8gb).
Outside of that though, I would not waste any money now in a CPU or GPU and instead save to do a 100% full upgrade

are you using a single stick or ram ? or multiple ? look in case and fine the same exact ram and purchase 1 extra stick of 4gb if it is a single stick plus 4gb is very small it only leaves 2gb for the game to use

games can use with the os can use up to 5-6gb depending on how intensive or ram heavy it is
