you can defer upgrades

If people are having trouble with the anniversary update for windows 10.

The cause may be because when it comes to Pc`s and systems the variation of hardware that can be used and the vast list of hardware available could be the cause.

After all Microsoft cannot test in reality if the os is going to perform 100% with a vast range of different possible hardware configurations could it.

There`s my take on it, but it`s nothing new, though a pain in the ass for some people.
It`s not like it has never happened with prior Microsoft OS`s is it really, where an update can break some systems, yet others seem to work fine.

Support for windows 7 may have been cut by Microsoft.
But I consider after many years and of course update and fixes for it to be very stable.
But that is only due to time, or how long it has been since windows 7 was first released.

It`s one of the reasons, why I stuck with windows 7 after years of use, it`s proved to be stable in my mind.
Where as windows 10 is still in it`s infancy if you were to be honest.

its also an upgrade and the best advice if an upgrade didn't work until now is a fresh install, nothing has changed. You are correct about the massive variety of different hardware combinations and the very small chance it will ever go smoothly for everyone

if you catch it in time you can defer updates. and defering updates does not mean it will not try to install it again without notifying you

this was the reason for the windows insider program where a software developer, tester, or a regular user can join for free and try later versions ( builds) of windows which users can provide feedback on. so MS has access to various configurations of computer now because of it

just installed the new version, took about 17 minutes, working ok for me so far.
version 1607 os build 14393.10

verified the install via:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.14393.0

Image Version: 10.0.14393.0

[==========================100.0%==========================] The restore operation completed successfully.

The sheer number of possible combinations means anything big released on PC always has to to expect some problems to occur for someone. The chances are a fair percentage of the people who signed up to insider preview did it for early access, not to test it... like happens with a lot of software.

That and people like to complain and make a song and dance about virtually nothing these days, so I am not amazed at all. Would have been if it had worked without someone complaining about it somehow. Give them time and they will think of something.

managed to rollback as my system freezed after 10sec each time I reboot, also all system restore points had been deleted, disabled win updates for now via services so it wouldn't ninja install it again.

My PC upgraded today and now when playing IL-2 BOS the game keeps freezing for a second every minute of so. Thanks Microsoft, if they knew about it they should have blocked the updates, I didn't even get the option. I did make the mistake of checking for update but on such a major update I thought it would verify if you actually want to update.

Yeah thanks I just did this, seems back to the way it was, though I'll still have to test it. Only took a minute I though it would take a while.

Capture a memory dump of your machine when freezes.
Change the memory dump type to kernel
https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.HOWTO31321.html

Then Google how to force a memory dump with the keyboard, make the registry settings and the next lock up force a memory dump.
Put the file c:\windows\memory.dmp on a server, share the file as public and post a link so we can see what is wrong and suggest a fix.

Anyone know what is actually broken here? Is it the update process or the actual update. I had the same issues with gaming when I update to Windows 10 from 8.1 but a clean install of windows 10 worked perfectly.

Is it still the huge update process that breaks something or is the build broken?

If I didn't game I wouldn't have noticed it, it's while gaming the issue comes up. I'm running a i74770K and AMD R9 Fury X and tried reinstalling drivers multiple times. The game was IL-2 BOS which is a DX9 game. Didn't even bother testing other games as at the moment that is what I play.

It updated for me fine but while gaming every minute or two the game would freeze then unfreeze. I only saw this when I updated from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, a fresh install of Windows 10 fixed the issue. Makes me wonder if the update process gets something wrong and if a fresh install would be ok.
