Dothan or Venice?

I haven't had chipset drive issues with SiS since their Socket 7 days.

Yeh, I got mixed up with a board from a different post a while ago. You have to remember, I responded to your post without referencing the thread!

Despite what people are saying, power consumption wise, the A64s have nothing on the P-Ms no matter if you're talking about the rev Es or anything for that matter. First off, if you read that LostCircuits article, you'll see that their method of measurement isn't exactly foolproof. Instead to look at power consumption, it's much easier to have a gander over at the battery lives of comparable notebooks with A64s and P-Ms.

For example, the newly launched Acer Aspire 5000 (with a 1.6GHz Turion 35W) and a Dell Inspiron 6000 (With a 1.6GHz P-M) were compared and the Dell came out to almost double the battery life of the Turion system. Take in maybe a few things here and there, there still shouldn't be that large of a difference in battery life if they are equal or close in terms of power consumption.

If you want the coolest/lowest power consumption system, then go P-M. Overclocking with those uATX S479 boards seems to be okay too if you want to increase performance.

But almost a 2x difference? There must be some CPU power consumption effects there.

<A HREF="http://nfiniti.blogspot.com" target="_new">nfiniti plus one</A>

But in the end those all attribute to the power concumption as you said. And that's what matters no? It's not like that Turion doesn't have any power saving features. The Dothan just has better ones.

*slaps wusy

Stop following me through the boards...

And I didn't say the Dothans have half the power consumption. I just said they're better than the A64s. (Actually we're not even talking Turions here, specifically Rev Es.)

Haha!

Anyways, I think I kinda digressed as well. In any case, I still stand by my comment that the Dothan has less power consumption than the Turion or Rev Es.

But in any case, I'm sure either would be fine for a HTPC... I mean you'll probably never notice the difference between 20W and 30W...

When comparing heat output, all I cared about was PEAK output. This is for a QUIET PC, and it has to remain quiet, even when loaded.

It looks like the heat difference is small enough that either the Venice or Dothan could be used while maintaining low noise.

So what are you going to do? The A64 does have a wider range of choice of motherboards in the uATX range.

A wider range of poor choices, yes. And very few good choices, especially in Socket 939. But the MSI RS480 board looks decent.

Well if you're looking for something for a HTPC, I'd assume you're not gonna be overclocking, so anything stable would be okay. There's also no real difference in performance between the A64 boards so that shouldn't affect your choice.

The Foxconn nF4 boards look decent as well.

The MSI RS480 has certain advantages for HTPC such as not requiring a chipset fan, and having 3 traditional PCI slots.

Only because of unfamiliarity.

This system will have 2 hardware-compression TV-tuner cards and a high end soundcard. Since the PCIe versions of the Theater 550 cards aren't out yet, 3 PCI slots are prefered. But since an early sample of a PCIe TVWE might be available, on PCIe slot MIGHT be OK.

Underkill on the TV tuner and possibly overkill on the noise. I'm thinking Gigabyte passively cooled X800XL.

Oh man... I'm starting to get very curious as to the application of this rig? I know that you told us once that you couldn't tell... but will you tell us when its done? Or maybe just tell us now so that I don't forget in a week like you are hoping I will :)

I'm not certain I have approval to build this yet, but when I do, someone will let you know.

wow, this sounds pretty covert... when this person lets me know... is it going to be in the form of a self destructing message? Cause in all my years as a spy I have never once actually had an 8-track go up in smoke infront of my eyes.

This thing is beginning to sound like a project that I had wanted to put together one day when I win the lotto (or find some other means of getting rich) to turn a room into a home theater / DivX movie server / TIVO-thingy with a SVGA projection unit, surround speakers, and all that. The idea was for total room immersion. :)

Of course I had never intended squeezing it into a small form factor. I was going to go the opposite route so that I had the room for a big RAID 5 array.

Good luck with it though, whatever your goal may be.
