The communist EU doesn't have people facing hunger because they steal money from intel and microsoft.

America's own people starve because Europe steals with phony fines. American corporations do what they can to help but it can't stop the tide of Europe/Obama socialism.

Intelpatriot: If socialism means spending our money on providing healthcare to all of our citizens instead of bombing the crap out of countries on the other side of the world, then I'm all for it. You wouldn't know what socialism is if you looked it up on Wikipedia. As a side note: I'm sure Intel and Microsoft are still netting a profit in Europe despite the fines, and only a complete idiot would describe the charges against Intel as phony.

"Microsoft is donating $1.15 per download to Feeding AmericaTM, up to a maximum of $1,000,000."

$1.15 = 8 meals? Are we talking Ramen on sale?

Well, i'm EU and just downloaded it. If it makes you feel any better intelpatriot most of those '25 million low-income people facing hunger in the United States' are probably Mexican anyway...

I gotta know!!! MS spent millions developing it and are now giving away money to get us to download their free browser. WHY????? What am I missing here????

Is there more to this browser war thing, like when politicians spend millions for a job that pays $60-200K a year????

m$ is getting cheaper by the day... just one million of tax deductible money?
How low can they get? To use the misfortune of others to just promote their crap... The likes of m$, greedy for more and more money, are responsible for the hard times of regular people, in the first place. Do they believe, that they could clear their heavy laden conscience - if they really have just a bit of it - with this marketing stunt?
Shame on you Jane, for promoting this BS.
No wonder, TH is hungry again for some ad money:
"Internet Explorer 8 Download Contest", prominently featured on top of every page...

well, Downloaded the file but from the looks of the site I'd say it's a nigerian scam so I ain't gonna run it :D Anyway, tis is really cheap and worthless, I just hope I didn't kill anyone with my download

To the guys who bash this as another publicity move:

Firefox did a similar thing on a larger scale with the "Use Firefox!" and "install Firefox everywhere!" campaign...as if that wasn't a publicity grab that continues today.

I'm writing this through Firefox, but that's because my Windows 7 IE8 install is FUD for some strange reason. I would be out of FireFox shoes as soon as IE8 works.

It would be stupid to think that MS is only doing this for the children. Pushing people to upgrade their product is the major priority. That said, Microsoft could have launched a campaign WITHOUT donating to needy families. It might be tax-writeoff, but I think i'd rather have it benefit people besides tv stations running ads.

Also: Internet Explorer isnt all that bad. I've used it for years. Yes, I have tried out firefox, and I even have it installed on the computer. However, IE still remains my top choice when browsing. As for security flaws, I've never had anything slip through my AV & Firewall.

Man this is really crap ms is just getting their one million of tax deductible money and spent it on a campaign rather than on taxes, nasty.
Have just downloaded a few times and then gotten back to Firefox.
MS is really trying to push their silvershit and IE crap forward.
(However it is good for replacing the retard that is IE6 with better IE8)
(Now if MS would only support svg vector graphics for the web from w3c: world wide web consortium, where MS is a member of!)

[citation][nom]christop[/nom]damn what a sad way to boost a bad browser.... Guilt trip people into this piece of crap... Good one ms next chump....[/citation]
exactly what I was thinking. this whole article is a bunch of crap just like the religious e-mail forwards. I'm sorry true religion does not guilt trip its followers - priests and the like do that.

if microsoft really cared about these children they would donate a million or whatever dollars to them regardless of how many downloads their browser got. not one person here can argue that or use logic to get around it other than microsoft is trying to guilt people. I mean give me a break. microsoft doesn't already donate to charities for tax breaks? I doubt that. this is pathetic craptastic advertising.

and let me get this straight - if we choose not to download IE8 then it's our faults that these kids went hungry and starved? not microsoft's right? nice one microsoft! and for them a million dollars is a drop in the bucket especially for such guilt trip advertising. I mean yes a million would help out tremendously but for microsoft it is pretty wimpy donation amount.

hmmm - just think if Alienware (or Antec or whoever) one day decided to make a bunch of booger green cases and found out they didn't sell here's the perfect way to sell them! =P

wtf? lol I just read the fine print some people were commenting on - obviously the majority commenting didn't - let me post it for those not paying attention -

Microsoft® is donating $1.15 per download to Feeding America® up to a maximum of $1,000,000. Meals are used for illustrative purposes only. Meal conversion is effective until June 30th, 2010.

- ummm it is far from 8 meals - as it states meals are for ILLUSTRATIVE purposes. so to answer the one commenter - no $1.15 does not equal 8 meals and the article stating that you are bettering the lives of 8 people is completely false to.

do people at Tom's proof anything? or research it a little first? obviously microsoft chose the number of 8 meals why? come on people I know you can do it - IE8! gee, what a coincidence.

the part I am not quite sure on is the last sentence - Meal conversion is effective until June 30th, 2010. - ummm it makes you think that's because price changes would effect the conversion rate or how much food you could buy but the sentence right before already shows you this is bogus. maybe this sentence is there because by then IE9 will be out and then we will be donating 9 meals for $1.15 or less!

What a load of crap. I tried IE8 and went back to IE7. It seemed like every time I clicked on anything I got diverted to a Microsoft business partner who wanted to sell me something. No thanks.

ok, so I researched on the actual Feeding America web site and no where can I find where it says specifically how many meals 1 dollar is but it states for every donated $1 "Feeding America helps provide 10 pounds of food and grocery product". I think the key word there is "helps". Sounds like the actual dollar doesn't necessarily buy the 10 pounds. I am sure they have some deal with food suppliers looking for tax breaks to though through donations/discounts or something similar. I took the quiz to and no info there. Why microsoft chose $1.15 per download I don't know. Just a weird number or does the extra 0.15 cents go to something else?

also - what is the difference in food and grocery? is that like paper plates and plastic silverware? I always thought groceries was food to.

Exactly how much are they donating per download? I think I'll just donate a grocery bag full of canned goods to the food shelf.

As someone that got free lunch during my school days, I didn't go to the food bank over the summers, especially considering the fuel expended simply getting there would cost more than the 99 cent loaves of potatoe bread I used to eat.

wouldn't do it. microsoft would just think many had downloaded ie8 to use it.
why not microsoft make a flavor of ie8 that is simple, secure and fast as chrome. one browser fits all does not work anymore.

Don't know aboout the US but in the UK groceries are what you would buy from a greengrocers - fruit, vegetables.
Back on topic
I'm not one to bash IE (i'm using IE7) but has anyone actually had a good experience of IE8? I downgraded to '7 'cause it kept on crashing out and would often take forever to open a web page, especially when opening a new tab.
