Download speed capped at 1.2mb

Ok, so I’ve been trying to download games on steam and realised that the download speed wouldn’t go above 1.2mb. Now that’s odd, because on download speed test, my internet connection is about 12mb per second so why is it capped? I tried to change the speed and duplex from 10mbps to auto negotiations but that just caused network flapping. Anyone got any idea how to fix this? Any help is appreciated 😀

That's because steam speed is measured in Megabytes per second and your Internet Service provider is measured in megabits per second. There are eight bits to a byte.

can you post an image of your speed test? Most of them are done in mbps where steam uses MB/s. 12mbps = 1.5MB/s so if that is true then you downloading almost as fast as your ISP will allow you to.

Your download speed is not the only aspect to consider - the servers the file is hosted on etc (in this case Steam's) will play just as much of a part in the equation than anything else.

BUT,
Your internet speed tests are typically reported in Mb/s (megabits/second) whereas Steam's downloads (i believe) are reported in MegaBytes (MB/s)

A "byte" = 8 "bits"

So 12Mb/s = 1.5MB/s

To be even more clear,

MB with a capital B is MegaByte

Mb with a lower case b is Megabit


What alarms me is you getting a network speed of 10 megabits with autonegotiation.

Most any nic/router within the last 20 years should give you a local network connection of at least 100 megabits, if not 1000 megabit (gigabit).

Under your NIC settings speed and duplex should be set to autonegotiation.

Can you confirm that your actual computer's connecting speed is 10 megabits?


Type "Network and Sharing" into the windows search box and click the blue Ethernet on the right side of the page.

This should show the speed of the connection between your computer and our router.

If it is indeed 10 megabits, more troubleshooting will need to be done.

Steam does throttle their upload speeds, their connection(s) are fast but not unlimited and there are alot of other people downloading/using their servers.

If you look at Barty's signature he gets 119mbps down and 33mbps up. If he downloads from steam he would be getting 14.5MB/s download.

I know at home i peak between 177 an 195mbps from comcast, when i download from steam i get 22-24MB/s. 1mbps = .125MB/s or you can use this https://www.gbmb.org/mbps-to-mbs
