Download speed dropping from 25mbps to 2

Visiting my parents and I realized that their download speed is dropping severely. After resetting their modem, it will progressively drop over the course of a day or two until it needs to be reset again.

It's strange because they actually own an expensive modem, so what could be the cause and a potential fix? If they need to get a new one, do you have any recommendations?

Could be line noise. The modem will slow reduce speeds trying to get a good stable connection. Best way you can tell although not fool proof is to unplug all filters and the modem and pick up the phone and make a call to see if you hear crackling.

All assuming you are using something like ADSL
