I used to have the G602 mouse and had one of the buttons configured as the "sniper button". Is it possible to customize the buttons on a standard mouse that has the back and forward buttons to do the same thing?

Not the same thing per say. The button on your mouse most likely changed the way the sensor read the DPI. Gaming mice have a very High DPI that they can read or cut to change how sensitive they are. This is all done with the Hardware.

A standard mouse has a fixed (usually low) DPI it will read at. You can use Software to adjust the sensitivity, but it wouldn't be quite the same, and assigning it to a button would require some third party software/magic.

yes and no.

on mice that do not support dpi switching in their software you could look at https://autohotkey.com/board/topic/31227-control-mouse-dpi-with-autohotkey/ or https://autohotkey.com/board/topic/13531-adjusting-mouse-sensitivity-via-hotkey/ as that may get you support to either a dpi change or at minimum windows mouse speed/sensitivity change.

most gaming mice have dpi changing built into the hardware or software while other mice do not come with such options.
