unable to drag and drop files and folders to my cd r/w. the icon that says copy now says move and does't do anything after the file or folder has been draged to the cd . if i press the burn button, vista tells mr there are no files or folders to burn?????? this worked fine a few weeks ago and now catastrophe!!!!! anyone who can help????? you can contact me at bulldog1547@yahoo.com

i'm a hardware tech and it's not necessary to use a blank cd. if you know anything about windows vista, then you would know that it will keep adding files to the cd, until it's full and even over write existing files with the same name. but thanks for your input....not much help. i only have 1 dvd/cd/rw device, so, yes i'm draging to the correct device. this is a recent problem, and i'm not the only one enjoying this experience. must be related to a recent update. just thought someone may have found a solution

AS I THOUGHT THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN CAUSED BY SERVICE PACK 2 FOR WINDOWS VISTA, AS POSTED BY JEFFERY TAN...WHO FOUND A SOLUTION, BUT IT'S ONLY GOOD FOR CD/RW'S, NOT TESTED ON DVD/RW'S. SO, MICROSOFT IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND IT HAS BEEN GIVEN TO HOT FIX TEAM OR WE MAY HAVE TO WAIT FOR SERVICE PACK 3.
IN THE MEAN TIME I HAVE DOWNLOADED AND INSTALLED A FREE GENERIC DVD/CD BURN PROGRAM WHICH ALLOWS ME DRAG AND DROP AND BURN TO DVD/CD RW DISK. THE PROGRAM IS FROM INFRARECORDER
IF BY FINALIZED, YOU MEAN FIXATED...NO THE DISK IS NOT FIXATED
REMEMBER I SAID THE DRAG AND DROP AND BURN WORKED FINE UNTIL MICROSOFT DOWNLOADED AND IN STALLED UPDATES? I BEEN A TECH FOR 20 YRS AND SPENT 10 OF THOSE YRS IN THE SILICON VALLEY. SO MY LOGICAL PROCESS LEADS ME TO WHERE CHANGES MIGHT HAVE OCCURED...MICROSOFT UPDATES!
I DO WANT TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP, BUT I'LL AWAIT HOT FIX OR SERVICE PACK 3. IN THE MEAN TIME PLAN B IS WORKING FINE...SOMETHING I LEARNED YRS AGO, IF YOU CAN'T FIX A PROBLEM, GO AROUND IT...BE CREATIVE...HEHEHE

Just a tip, CAPS = yelling.

By finalizing, I mean finalizing. When a disc is burning, it buffers and finalizes.

In all honesty, most people that seek help here, really don't know jack about computers. That's why we rule out the obvious issues first. That's actually one of the first things you learn back in A+.

So what was the name of the update?

THE UPDATE HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED YET. THAT'S WHY I SAID I WOULD WAIT. I TRIED SFC /SCANNOW ALSO AND MICROSOFT TELLS ME THAT I HAVE NO CORRUPT FILES...I'M PERPLEXED! THIS DRAG AND DROP TO CD WORKED FINE TILL SERVICE PACK 2 FOR WINDOWS VISTA WAS DOWNLOADED AND INSTALLED. I BELIEVE THERE IS A PROBLEM IN THE SYSTEM REGISTRY. I COMPARED MY VISTA ULTIMATE W/MY VISTA HOME BASIC REGISTRY ON MY NETWORKED LENOVO LAPTOP AND THERE ARE SOME DIFFERENCES, BUT I AM NOT THAT FAMILAR W/ THE REGISTRY TO MAKE ANY CORRECTIONS. I APOLOGIZE IF I CAME OFF SNOTTY...FRUSTRATION YOU KNOW?

i'm not sure if the disk finalizes? how would i check? i know that i formated a disk udf 2.50 and microsoft uses udf 1.02. could this cause the problem? checked the format protocol and don't see udf 1.02

At the end of the burning process, depending on the program, it will say 'finalizing disc.' After this has occured on a CD-R, you can no longer edit it. That's how you can tell for sure.

If you're simply trying to burn something, you can try other programs such as power dvd, nero, roxio...etc.
