Hello:
Does anyone know when dual amd motherboards will be available? I would like to put together a dual 1ghz computer with some ddr ram if possible. Will amd have to release a new chip for the SMP to work or can i throw in two thunderbirds? (i'm currently running 2 p2-400's and won't go back to 1 processor after this) Sorry if these questions sound silly, i don't know too much about amd's products, but want to know more. Thanks!

Thought that info was just in the 760 chipset article. Think the dual is not do out till later this spring.
Check the article, I'm sure it's mentioned.

they will ship in volume q2 2001, i do believe

I am probably supposed to be doing something else.

DUAL ATHALON (bi-athalon?) is what I'm waiting for!
The name seems to be built for multi processors.
Yes, I would like an 8-way, but will probably need wait a few years :)

I'm prbobaly wrong, but isn't the Q2 2001 AMD chip a 'pentium clone' rather than something from the Athalon line?

Hey,

I'm half awake so i haven't had time to check the other replies but I think they geared the mp chipset for q2 2001. The 760 single chipset should be out by X-mas.

Dual AMD will be the greatest thing for amd since athlon came out. I hope my next box will host a dual amd with ddr. Its prety fun to dream but more realisticly the chance of having one before the end of next year are pretty small.

Yeah, i thought they might be release q1 of next year but wasn't sure how long it would be till i could get a hold of one. Who currently makes the single processor 760 and where can i get it? I will probably buy one and the MB now and then just get another and a new MB when Q1 arrives. Thanks!

why not just go out and buy a dual cpu setup? abit vp6 and pe 800e coppermines. it'll do the job just as well.

With the Pentium series performing at near half the level of FPU, and me being into 3d Max and the like, I'm waiting for the next gen AMD proc's with dual mobo support and DDR (or whatever they have by then). Maybe the next gen Pentiums will impress/entice me with a new and wonderful FPU, but I'm not holding my breath. Intel seems to have a different direction in mind.

I too am a 3DSMAX user, and have been reading the comparisons between the athlon and pentium, i am sold on the atlon a hundred times over, I am about to upgrade to a new system, Mother board and processor, but would like to get ahold of dual athlons, does anyone know what the highest speed athlon processor will be suported for dual processing. and also could someone point me to an article on this DDR? not quite sure what it is or what makes it AMD only stuff.

Thanks. PS anyone else involved in 3d graphics, please let me know if you have found an optimal setup using AMD sort of a (what your are running and how does it perform)

Seriously, I believe the articles on AMD DDR are in the chipsets and mainboards section of articles. I *believe* Tom has reviewed them already... yeah, I really think so. :) Can't remember right now! The current highest speed on AMD chips is the Thunderbird 1.2GHz. I'm sure that they'll have considerably better by the time SMP motherboards are available. DDR won't give you too much of a boost, IMO, in 3D Max. It's not worth the money on it's own. However the SMP is! Oh yeah, what's your preference for 3D Max, Trackball or mouse? I'm thinking about getting a trackball sometime soon.

I suggest you forgo the 760 mp, that is depending on your time constaints, money situation, and product availability.
The 760 mp will probably be a very good chipset and be out realatively early; it's that better performing chipsets should be out next year.

If you really want a kick ass mp system I would wait for micron's northbrige chip mamba w/8mb level 3 cache.
That is a mp computer enthusiasts dream machine for next year. That 8mb level 3 cache should give a very nice performance boost. I hope Micron doesn't go down the same road as Rambus and have this product to high priced for the mainstrem to use right away. I am waiting on biulding my new sytem until it comes out.( that is if micron sells it to mobo makers to use in mobo's for public consumption)

If you can't wait or afford it, I suggest you go for 760mp it should be rock solid and well priced.

Ibismojo, i do have a dual PII-400 setup right now and really like it, but I wanted the athlon b/c of it's nice FPU performance since I do alot of work in Maya and progs like it. The DDRAM is an added bonus as well and I am awaiting the day that i can get a hold of one of these boards. Heck, i might get the single board first and then buy another athlon and the MP board when it comes out. Anyways, thanks for the response guys. l8r
