I play alot of games and there is almost always someone in my house streaming or downloading. We have a dual band router but I'm still heavily affected by their use. The most bandwith usage comes from my dad who is plugged into the router and I'm on the 2.4 ghz channel so I'm wondering how do I configure the router so that I'm affected as little as possible. My network adapter is only 2.4 ghz but I can get a 5 ghz if needed.

Hello td0615vfx!

I fully understand the issue.

You could get a 5GHz network adapter if you live in an apartment/condominium or somewhere that many Wi-Fi networks are available when you search for an access point, this way it will reduce the interference of your wireless connection. Otherwise, a good 2.4GHz network adapter is good enough for now.

You can modify settings on the router, specifically the QoS (Quality of Service) settings. In this setting, you can prioritize your game packets over your dad's stream. He does have an advantage as he is directly plugged into the router and cabled Ethernet connection is always faster than any wireless connection (at least for now).

Let me know if I can help you further!
The dual bands really isn't going to affect the overall speed considering each band has the same source. However, you may be able to limit/throttle your dad's connection. Check and see if your router has QoS (Quality of Service).
