You might run into problems with recent Win8 laptops. Most of these are shipped with UEFI Bios, and GUID ( GPT) based hard disk, so putting Linux there will be a challenge. This guy http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=80103 seems to have done it.
Whatever you do, make sure you have your data backed up, and you have created (or have ordered) recovery media for your laptop.
