Dual channel RAM as Quad channel RAM

If I configure an LGA 2011 X79 MB with two 2x4GB of dual channel RAM (16GB total) would my board use them as quad channel RAM?

if you are using 4 sticks and have them in the correct slots, yes. btw, 2x4G is 8G unless you mean 2 sets of 2X4G

yeah, I meant two sets of 2X4G. So the memory I buy doesnt need to be labled as "Dual Channel" for my board to use it like that as long as I have the correct board/chipset.

Whats the deal with RAM been labeled as dual or quad channel then? or been for chipset X79 o Z77? do all work with all then?

That means it has been tested to work in dual channel or quad channel setups. They guarantee it to work in that setup. If you get 2 sets of dual channel and run it in quad channel you could have errors and if you do get them the memory company might not help if they have bad customer service.

Thanks for your replies! One ast question, would you rather get 4x2Gb or 2X4Gb RAM? Is there a noticeable benefit using the quad channel feature?

With 8GB total you won't see much of a difference between going 2x4GB or 4x2GB, quad channel utilization generally really shines with's more DRAM and in highly memory centric apps and multi-tasking
