Dual-Channel?

I've just upgraded my computer Now I have a few doubts about memory:
The mobo is a MSI k8N Neo4 SLI that, as you would expect, supports dual-channel DDR.
I bought a kit of 2 Kingston PC3200, single sided 256 memory - total 512.
Now the instructions seem a bit confusing since it states that I should use the green
slots first and then the purple ones. In the diagram though it appears that for
them to work as dual-channel that I should put the two cards in the first(green) and second(purple) slots!?
Can someone clarify that for me.

Also I have another memory card from my old computer which is also PC 3200 but double-sided.
Aparently if I use that in the new mobo all 3 cards will work but not as dual-channel.
Is that correct?
Is it better to have 512 in dual channel mode or single channel mode with 1024?

Thanks in advance.

the ram slots are: Green, Purple, Green, Purple
for dual channel, inhabit slots Green1 and Purple1
As far as dual channel plus another module I have no idea if that will work. I'm running in dual channel mode and I haven't noticed any difference, but I don't Overclock either.
