was wondering if anybody has tried using 2 fans on heatsink and how much of a gain does it add, I have a xigmatek 1283 in my sons computer and the new 1284 going in mine thanks.

Something tells me that if were truly a good idea it would have been done a billion times already. I imagine at some point there is a diminishing rate of return when it comes to airflow and heat loss... I'm guessing that one fan setups have already reached that point. You're better off using a second fan to intake cool air or exhaust hot air from your case.

2 fans have been used billions of times, but it IS a case of diminishing returns.
The best setup is a straight push+pull config (assuming u have that type of sink). It works best in high density heatsinks.

the design guidelines spelled out in Scott's convective cooling handbook, recommend plenum space (or "free air", e.g. air outside computer) before and after a fan. he has a more eloquent way of putting it but basically, it's not good to jam the fans together.

if you want more cooling ness, the 120 mm x 35/36/i forget is a good choice.

Scott was an engineer at Varian who did a lot air-cooling on travelling wave tubes, where 10 kW with a 10% duty cycle is a typical load to be cooled. he kept loads of lab notes and eventually curve-fitted his work. he came out with a small light-blue textbook that i got a copy of in the mid-80's and used a lot working in Silicon Valley.
