Hello. I am using currently an i5-4460 + GTX 1060 6Gb.
I play TF2 competitively and would like to get 200+ frames at all time, even when there is a lot of things happening on the screen. It can get pretty intensive sometimes. I am currently getting 100-150 average frames, but when things get intense, they drop to 70 or 80 fps. I am planning to upgrade to a new PC and I am wondering if a single GTX 1080 with i7-7700k would do the trick? (getting 200+ frames at all time) or do i have to get 2 GTX 1080s. I play at 1080p, and I am not sure of whether a single gtx 1080 would do it, or dual, a 1070.. etc.. please give me some information if you know any!

BTW- I am using a 144hz monitor, not a 60hz one xD

Thanks!

You should go for 144+ fps not 200+ fps, and a gtx 1080 should get you 144+ but take in consideration that your current cpu may not be able to deliver that framerate, i7 7700k can achieva that. 1st just keep your current gpu and change the cpu and motherboard(and of course the ram too) and see if you can get 144+ fps all teh time, if not then a 1070 or 1080 but my advice only after you upgraded the cpu and tested with your current gpu.

TF2 is Team Fortress 2. I am not sure if anything is wrong to be honest. I am even using a custom graphics script to lower graphics quality to achieve higher frame rate, but I still get 100-150 in normal situations and 80 or even 40s in intense moments. TF2 is 10 years old.. so it is not the best coded game if you compare it to todays games. So I am expecting to get less fps on Team fortress 2 than other games at 1080p such as Battlefield 4 on the same specs. It is weird, but whatever.

Thanks for the tips!

I played Team Fortress 2 on an R9 270 years ago. I never dropped below insanely high framerates. Your system is 100% capable of it aswell, I don't even doubt this.

Which graphics drivers are you using? When is the last time you updated?

Have you monitored CPU+GPU temperatures?

How did you install Windows 10, from an upgrade?

i7-7700k + GTX 1080 SLI won't improve your performance at all. Why do you say?:

TF2 is very CPU limited, it can't use more than 2 cores. The 2 cores when comparing an i5-4460 to an i7-7700k is going to very be minimal. Also, the power of your 1080 SLI plans will be wasted, with arguably below 15% GPU usage for both, guaranteed.

Fresh Windows install will most likely fix your issues and will be like ''an upgrade to i7-7700k + GTX 1080 SLI"'.

I have Nvidia GeForce experience, so drivers are always up to date. Windows 10 was installed manually and not an upgrade. I never really monitor the temperature of my cpu or gpu, i would not know what they mean.
I am not sure where the problem would be if there is any, cuz I try to keep everything up to date (drivers)

I did re install the driver and temps are fine, no difference.
When you played TF2 with your specs, did you get a 200+ fps at ALL time?
