So i have a netgear a6200 wireless usb adapter, and I have given up on trying to get it to stop dropping connection. I'm running windows 8.1, which it has many issues with. I've done all the recommended fixes, disabling power saving everywhere, and it still drops connection. Before I got this adapter, I was using a powerline wall-powered adapter which also dropped connection. I don't want to buy anything else, but could I have both the powerline and the adapter plugged in, so that if one lost connection, the other would keep working? I play counter strike, so connection loss is a serious issue, even if it is just for a couple seconds. It wouldn't be so bad if the connection came back by itself, but both the powerline and usb required replugging to get my connection back. TL;DR: can I have a powerline and usb adapted running simultaneously, one as a backup to the other?

Solution
You can in theory use the powerline and wireless as a backup to each other but in practice it doesn't work too well. The problem you have is the PC only looks at things very basically. The ethernet port can be electrically connected to the local powerline box but still not pass any traffic. The PC is too stupid to differentiate between just being turned on to actually functional. This is why routing protocols were invented but it is not practical to do that on a end pc and a consumer router.

I would still get a long lan cable just for testing purposed....or move your pc next to the router. You need to find out if you still get failures. It does not pay to try to resolve so called network issues when the problem could be...
No.

I'd be surprised if Windows 8 was the cause as well. I've never had issues with over 20 W8 computers and several combinations on several of those computers as well.

I'm not sure what to tell you at this point.

Can you confirm that OTHER COMPUTERS are working fine on the same network?

well, the netgear a6200 has known compatibility issues with windows 8/8.1, and the "compatibility update" that was released did very little. Do you have any suggestions with how to proceed, keeping in mind that i'd prefer not to buy any new hardware? much appreciated. Other computers work great on this network, desktops on lan and laptops with built-in wifi.

Maybe load windows 10 and see if it makes any difference.
