Dual LAN jacks ?

As a server to double your throughput to the network. (this is the only feasible reason to me)

As a router or bridge connecting multiple networks. (including taking the place of a broadband router you can buy for $50...)

To connect to 2 physically separate networks with the same PC. (one of my old employers forced us to do that - connect to the Corporate WAN and our local division LAN and they were security fanatics - or maybe that's just the nice way to put it)

To run a web server in a DMZ while still having access to your local network. (never done that - why would someone want to???)

Hmmm... this sounds like it should be a 'top 10 list' lol...

and #1: To wow your friends and buddies when you tell them you have a TWO-gigabit/sec LAN connection... with a 128k ISDN line... [grin]

That is sort of strange, isn't it! And, don't stop at TWO! The new boards now are sporting 2 gigabit LAN ports AND 1 802.11g wireless! Now you've got THREE network connections. Talk about multi-tasking!!! 😀

I have a few Linux machines with two NICs in them, but they are for gateway/routing and I can picture a lot of applications for bridging between two LANs in a corporate environment. But those bridges are seldom used as personal computers -- they just sit there and "bridge" so they wouldn't need to be high-power boards with 8 SATA and 3 1394b and so on; just a couple of NICs and a little memory.

Marketing? Now THERE's the answer!! It SOUNDS COOL! Like flashing LEDs on your DDR RAM.

Go figure! 🙂

If I wanted to use my computer as a gateway to my home network, I could hook one LAN jack to a broadband connection and the other my home network. Back at school I had TWO connections available, both capped at 10 megabit, and I used TWO cards to get 20 megabits. Mad bandwidth to the internet!

Also, if ALL your computers had two cards, you could daisy chain them together using crossover network cables, rather than using a hub or router.

We do it at my work. We have 2 LAN's. One is for our PLC network (psudo-computers that control our equipment) and one is for our HMI network (PC's that interface with the PLC's). We do this for the same reasons and mentioned, bandwidth.
