Dual Monitor Conundrum

Hi all,

I am running Dual monitors. The primary 27" 1440p and the secondary is 27" 1080p. I have this issue (which drives me nuts) where when the monitors go to sleep, sometimes when I wake them up my icons on the right side of my primary monitor are moved halfway across the screen. I am wondering why this happens? Is it because the monitors are different resolutions? or is it a setting somewhere? I know it's kind of insignificant but it really drives me nuts. Would love to fix it if I can. My gpu is a ASUS Strix-1080GTX. Also the primary is using display port and the secondary is HDMI.

Thanks in advance

My guess is the different resolution. When I load Red Alert 2 on my machine which has a max res of 800x600 or something like that, it will shift things around onto my side monitors. (I have four attached to my R9 280.) I've never had it move icon however. Are your icons "loose"? I have enabled that "snap to grid" or whatever it's called. Perhaps that will help.

What is most likely happening is that your graphics card is "disconnecting" one of the monitors when they go to sleep (likely because their timing is slightly off or something like that.) It's then moving everything from the monitor with the larger resolution to the smaller, and then when it wakes up and it sees two, it moves things back as best it can.

First step is to see if there are any updated drivers for your card.

I've had the same issue doing triple displays on a HD5770, so the issue is not GPU/driver-specific. My guess is that Windows sometimes forget the display enumeration order and momentarily picks a different primary display when coming out of standby or display sleep, resetting all the icons there. My main display is on a 22" 1080p just to keep the task bar off of my main 24" since I hate when notifications make the bar pop up on top of whatever I am doing and I could not find any other way to kill that always on top behavior. That used to be an option from Windows 3.x until a few years ago in Windows 7 where Microsoft decided to remove the "Always on top" check box from the task bar's context menu.

I rarely use desktop icons, I simply pin all my most frequently used stuff on the task bar instead so the icons randomly jumping displays doesn't bother me all that much beyond being a reminder that Windows goofed up somewhere in the background again.
