I use a Dell XPS-15 9550 laptop with a Thunderbolt port that supports DisplayPort video. I want to use dual external monitors with an extended Windows desktop but am having trouble determining how much I need to spend on a docking station. Amazon has multi-port USB C docking stations that range in price from $5.00 to roughly $750. Obviously, the $5.00 units are junk but do I really need to spend $150 for a docking station with two 1920 X 1080 HDMI ports and a decent refresh rate? Suggestions would be much appreciated.

BTW, mixing video interfaces (e.g., one HDMI port and one DisplayPort) doesn't feel right. Is there really any technical reason not to do this?

Depends what you want. You could buy the a cheap dock if you don't need the power and extra ports. But if you want your dock to basically upgrade you to a workstation, then you need to get one of the Pro docks.
Obviously not the Surface Pro dock as that is only for a Surface.
