Dual Monitors

Hello, I just purchased a Lenovo netbook using windows 8. It plugged in my external monitor it is a Samsung with both VGA and HDMI. The laptop is only HDMI. When I plugged in the monitor I could see both monitors listed on the computer but nothing will come up on the second screen. The option for selecting Monitor 2 is grayed out. Any suggestions?

It's usually a Fn key to turn on an external monitor. Try Fn+F7.
