dual p3 vs single p4

Anyone know how dual 1ghz p3's compare to a single 1.5 ghz p4??
Also, what would be faster?? Does the ram for the p4 make that much of a difference?

I plan to use it to use 3d studio, bryce, programming, games, windows 2k, linux.

~Sorry some people thought that i ment 2 p4's, this was my mistake.

Intel doesn't support SMP in the P4's- only in the P4 Xeons. So, there's no way to compare. Check out this review of the P4 Xeon vs. a Dual P3:

Well the Northwood P4 should have SMP support. Well Dual P4 northwood 2.0ghz and a VIA PX266 should be pretty good. Thank you intel for making the Northwood SMP support.

I want to see the Northwood L2 512kb vs. Athlon MP L2 256kb.

Nice Intel and AMD users get a Cookie.... Yummy

yeah- that 512K L2 cache is gonna kill AMD. AMD needs to get on the ball and move over the 0.13 micron process or they're through.

Yeah, .13 micron could let Intel scale highier with Northwood there saying 6ghz "i think 4ghz, 6ghz maybe with .10 micron". Well with a longer pipeline less cache is needed. Well if the cpu get hammered with alot of data more cache is needed Intel must of found this out with "willy" P4. Well Northwood L2 512kb is a big factor for proformace making sure the processor doesnt slow down "by asking for for slower SDRAM". Well a 2ghz Northwood would look impressive cause intel is trying to lift every bottleneck for Northwood. Getting the Fpu to work right is a big step. Intel Fpu can do 4 instruction's at once. Intel had it working only at 2 instructions with the "Willy" P4. So Northwood is going to really have more proformace compare to a equally clocked Athlon 4 with L1 128kb(64bit) L2 256kb(64bit). Note Northwood will have L1 20kb(128bit) L2 512kb (128bit or 256bit ???)

Nice Intel and AMD users get a Cookie.... Yummy

i doubt it you'd be wasting a incredible amount of bandwidth on a processor that needs bandwidth to compete.

lopper, if you're serious about 3D Max and Bryce, I cant believe you wouldnt even consider an Atlhon. Have a look here:
<A HREF="http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1483&p=14" target="_new">http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1483&p=14</A>
and here:
<A HREF="http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/01q2/010608/athlon1400-09.html" target="_new">http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/01q2/010608/athlon1400-09.html</A>

A single Athlon 1.2 smokes a dual P3 933 and trashes a P4 1.7 Xeon in 3D. It even comes close to a dual Xeon P4 1.7. If 3D is your thing, Atlhon should be your first choice. If you can afford it, a dual Athlon would be the fastest renderer money can buy.

Games dont care much, if anything about dual CPU's, so a dual P3 would be a relatively expensive and a poor performer. P4's and Athlons are on par in gaming. If games are your thing, you'll have to decide between a P4 and a Athlon.. or rather, buy a fast videocard, since thats where the real gain is.

As for programming, I suppose you dont need anything remotely as fast as a P4 or Athlon. A duron or celeron would do just fine I presume.

If you sumarize, for your applications, a single Athlon 1.2-1.4 would really be the best buy. The fact thats its way cheaper then a dual P3 or a single P4 is just a bonus. Lets you buy a nice GF3 to enhance your gaming experience.

Q3 is the only game that Im aware of, that supports SMP. Not that it matters, have a look here:
<A HREF="http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1278&p=9" target="_new">http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1278&p=9</A>
You get 5% improvement in 640x480. Anything higher, your even better of disabling the SMP... (probably a glitch, but at least rest asured it wont outperform a single cpu machine by much if anything.)

Either way, with any 1Ghz+ cpu, the bottleneck in Q3 is the videocard. Doesnt matter if you have 4 cpu's in there.

thanks for the responses....i havent ruled out an athlon yet, i just wanted to know what people think of the pentium comparisons. you were talking about a dual athlon, arent the motherboards really expensive?? im not really familiar with amd's mobo's, do they offer rd-ram or ddr??

"you were talking about a dual athlon, arent the motherboards really expensive??"

Yeah.. for now the only available board is the Tyan.. A true server board with onboard SCSI, vga, 64 bit PCI slot, etc.. i think it is about $500. Reasonable for a server board, but maybe a tad high for an 'enthousiast' that doesnt need scsi and 64 bit pci.

"im not really familiar with amd's mobo's, do they offer rd-ram or ddr??"

DDR, yes, RDRAM, no. Why dont you read some revievs on this site, and anandtech to make up your mind. Would be much wiser than asking people's advise in this forum.
