Hey everyone, I am Akash from India, I am getting a used server with exact cofugaration below for RS 150000 (USD $2,317). Please let me know if i should go for the system My uses include 3d maya, after effect, vray, Blender etc etc. Also video encoring, decoding and render.

Configuration:

pecification 1. 2 x 12 Core 2670v3 (12 core) * 2 processor 2. 128GB RAM 3. 1 x 120GB with OS, 3 x 1TB

Camarero DS300TW-14RT (the brand of the server. I am new to this. Also 120gb is the SSD while others are HDD.
Also it has only one 600w PSU.

Should i buy this . i currently own dual x5650 based work station. would sell it for something like 200-300$.

A new system with the 2x 16 core skylake, 128gb ram, 1tb ssd, 2tb hdd, p2000 is $5000. It's not just 2 years but almost 4 years old so it's a good deal but not that good. How you could rent it out is something you'd have to decide on.

The thing is that the e5-2600 stand for the family of cpu and not the cpu that is in there. There are about a hundred in that family all the way from 2010-2016. Yours is limited to a v3 or v4 but those still have quite the differenece between them. You could be getting a good deal or a terrible deal. But without knowing whats in there I cannot say.

The main problem with this machine is that it will not hold a gpu meaning that it's useless for working on it. maya, after effects, vray and blender have all moved to gpu rendering to speed up the proccess (still uses the cpu quite a bit but the gpu is now the main powerhouse unless you use certain rendering presets).

I would not recommend getting this and just getting a threadripper 16 core cpu + good gpu and then use your current pc as a rendernode.
Maya, blender and vray support rendering support over the network where multiple computers can assist in rendering once setup. It's not that hard to do and once you have done the first setup you can easily add more. After effects is still enterly dependant on 1 pc however but is quite well optimized to use the gpu for almost everything.

Hey Jason,

I understand that now will have to read about GPU accelation then. I have always be depended on dual xeons and never looked at it. Also the Processor is 2670v3 (12 core) * 2. there are two of those in there. The price looks attractive for the amount of RAM (128gb ddr4 2400mhz) , 2*2670 and 3 TB of 10k HDD.

Maya and after effects still have not moved to gpu rendering. Although arnold that is used in maya is supposed to get gpu rendering support, it's been almost 2 years and still not out. If it did come out recently then show me because the last I used it was last year. AE has always had hardware rendering but that is not the same thing as the final output.

The server does hold a gpu. Take a look at specs and it says 2x pcie x16 although the case only has 2 full sized expansion slots so only 1 dual slot gpu. I would suggest trying gpu rendering as most other software have had gpu renderers for over a decade. Although it's a bit older being haswell, that is a good deal considering the specs. It's supposed to have 700w redundant psus so I'd wonder what they did to it.

Yes, I am totally unaware regarding GPU acceleration. Seems like have been living under a Rock. Have stuck to old methods it seems. Nevertheless I was checking DDR4 ram prices even those are like pretty high. I think I could sell say 24 gb of the ram for $200. So the price comes down to $2000. This seams a really good deal, 24 cores 128 gb. Do you think its possible to rent it for encoding or something even if it does not fit me for rendering. I mean these servers probably cost up to four may be five time of what I am getting it for and its just 2 years old. Could I put it to some kind of use and earn a bit.

Also I am not sure if a GPU would fit in. I don't know anyone who has used this server before but its difficult to put in a GPU inside a 1U server. I have used HP dl360 before and it didn't work for them.

Regarding Power supply- they have a few of these and want to keep one in case they ever need it. But I am not planning to use it as 24*7 server so I don't know if I need a redundant PSU.

Even a ryzen 1600, build in my country costs like $700 (high taxes). - 3 time of that but is it worth it? Ryzen 1600 was the initial plan before this offer came along. this is without any gpu.

You do need to add in a gpu tho to begin working with it. Since all of those programs will have major issues launching due to the onboard card being extremely basic.
