Duel channel q?

Hi i have a q? about duel channel ram. If i have four ram slots and i fill the first pair with 2X512 to give it 1024mb and the secound pair with 2X256 to give a total of 1536 do i still get the benifite from the duel channel. I know that for duel channel to work i need two of the same ram eg 2X256 but do i need all four to be of the same type or does it only matter for the pairs? Does that make sense, if so can some one plz answer.

It only matters in pairs. Normally the first pair goes to slots 1 and 3, the second to slots 2 and 4.
