So i ruined my old monitor: an asus vp278, which i think was a tn screen, by constantly vaping onto it. i bought a new monitor an asus vc279 ips display and the first thing i noticed was how washed out and murky the dark colours seemed compared to the old monitor, which i now have plugged in side by side with the new one. the text on web pages, and in applications also appears blocky and pixelated. ive messed around with all the display settings in the monitor to no real avail, updated my graphics drivers for my old HD 7970 and made sure the pixel format in the radeon control centre is full rgb 4:4:4.

ive uploaded a few pictures but im not sure they really make the issue very clear

any help would be appreciated as i dont really fancy sending this monitor back and waiting for a new one

Try running Windows' color calibration tool. Monitors for use with Windows are supposed to have a gamma (brightness curve) of 2.2, but it's not uncommon for monitors to deviate from that as the vast majority of Windows computers are not used for photo or graphics work. If your monitor has a gamma setting, tweaking it is preferred. If not, use the one built into Windows but be aware that this can cause clipping of highlights or shadows compared to using a monitor's built-in gamma adjustment.

As for pixelated text, it would be helpful if you could upload a close-up picture as an example. But for the time being, check to make sure that there's no scaling being done, so that each desktop pixel maps exactly to one monitor pixel.

And try running the ClearType configuration tool, which will let you optimize Windows' subpixel rendering for your monitor and gamma. Note that this should be done after you've completed the above two steps and are happy with the colors.
