Hi All,

Got a brand new R9 290X today, I purchased a NZXT Enthusiast tower for it to go in as well as a Cooler Master G750M to provide plenty of power (got the case and PSU on a deal) but as I was just playing Battlefield 4 the PC shut down, like a safety trigger instant shut down. I took the side of the case off and straight away I could feel the heat that the side of the case got too before I even got in there, directly below the R9 290X is my power supply, I felt it and it's like really hot.

i'll save you the trip. get a dual radiator like a h-100i or thermaltake water 3.0 extreme (NZXT Kraken X60 is great, if the case will do 280mm CLC's), mount it topside as exhaust. i5-4670k for sure. The 4770k is a much hotter cpu, and the price doesn't warrant the performance gains unless you are into 3d rendering type apps that can really take advantage of the HyperThreading. Majority of current games don't use more than 3-4 cores and more than a few only use 1-2, so 4+4 is pretty much wasted.
Best option I can see (nice looking build btw, very clean!) Take the exhaust fan from the center and mount it to the ODD/HDD cage where it blows air directly to the gpu, covering the backplate aswell as the fan side. It's unfortunate, but the reference gpus tended to be plagued by thermal problems.

Hi All,

Just been having a mooch at the rig and I found two problems, one is that the front intake fan had a poor re-wire job as they must have cut through the wire. And also the pin into the header on that particular wire was loose so definitely needs replacing. On top of the front intake fan not working, I also didn't think to check on top of the case at the speed fan controller (never had one so slipped my mind) it was set on the lowest and when I turned it up it made a substantial amount of difference, the air flow right now is brilliant off of the two.

I also forgot about the dual Bios on the 290X, I've set the BIOS to Uber mode which should also help. I'm on the lookout now for some good fans, can anyone recommend some?

PS - regardless of my picked solution, thank you all for your input it was much appreciated.

The bitfenix spectre pro's are good, as are the cougar vortex. If that side panel can do fans, I'd max it out in a hurry, you'll want as much air on that gpu as possible, they get hot in a hurry and when it ramps up... its loud, freight train loud, so the cooler it stays, the happier you'll be. Also, the NZXT stock fans are not all that shabby.

Thank you Karadjgne I'll have a look for those fans now :) I should also be getting a 4670k (going to add another post to clarify if this is the better option over the 4770k Price/Performance speaking) and get a Corsair closed water cooler for it in a push pull which should also help exhaust out the back.

Thanks again for your help, I just took a look at those and they seem very good indeed. As for the 280mm requirement I'd have to modify the case as it doesn't currently support that size. However I've got the 4670k with the stock cooler and I must say even with just the two top fans running I can max out my games and the temperatures aren't that bad. Therefore I think until I start over clocking the chip I may as well invest in some of the previous fans you mentioned to at least have an intake fan, and also get an 840 EVO SSD :) But that kraken x60 looks like it would do an amazing job considering the size of it.
