What are these new duron chips like. Looking at building a cheap system on a small budget that is highly upgadable. Was thinking of putting one of these on an Abit NF7 mobo as they are really cheap here. What are your thoughts on this idea? Also should i use pc2100 to keep in step with the FSB or should i go pc2700 to ready up for the upgraded cpu which would come some time next year?

go pc2700 but run at pc2100 for now. you will get much tighter ram timings that way. and you will be ready with pc2700 ram when you decide to upgrade

The duron is $65 AUD ($35US) and the 1700+ i have only seen second hand at the moment, and am a bit hesitant as chances are they have been overclocked. Can get a 2000+ new for about $120 AUD but this system is for a mates 14 year old son and hes a bit tight on cash and i dont want to be searching for a new cpu when a second handy has burnt out if ya get my jist. I'm just trying to give him the basics with the opportunity to still have a good system in 12 to 18 months time. But i will have a search for a new 1700+ , only have seen em on ebay, would you buy a cpu that may have been overclocked.

Also what do you guys think of the NF7 board , or any other n force board, with the onboard video as his budget is looking at a mx440 which apparently are about the same, or am i wrong there.

IGP could be a good idea. Nforce2 IGP is a geforce 4 MX.. so it's not going to be too bad for games of the Q3 generation and earlier.. I would suggest a Epox 8RGA+, as it's a little cheaper than the Abit board, and should be just as good for the future, plus you get all the wonders of nforce audio, so no sound card needed.

If price is still an issue, I noticed shuttle also do an nforce2 IGP mobo, and it's about 15-20 US$ cheaper than the epox, but I have no idea how good it is.

The end is nigh.. (For this post at least)

Thanks for that as i couldnt work out whether the NF7 -M abit had onboard sound or not. And this kid is on a real budget, like i'm trying to give him a gaming box that is highly upgradable for like $400 AUD which is like $250US. As long as i give him something upgradable it will be for the better. He can always save for that good cpu or graphics card then. Thanks for the help guys.!>!>!>!

I 've never seen an nForce2 board without at least stereo sound. With the basic NF7 you will not have 3D sound, but the stereo output is enough!
