Duron cpu running at 210F

I have a duron 1300 cpu. It had problems freezing up windows 98. Following a hunch, i checked the in the bios and found that it is running at 99c/210f !!! The processor is clocked at its normal speed, never been oc'd, and is using an appropriate fan/heatsink cooling solution. I reset the cmos, checked all the jumpers on the mb to no avail.

The mb is a gigabyte GA-7zxe.

Make sure the CPU fan is spinning and the heatsink is clean from dust.

It is recommended that you get a better heatsink + fan.

But be careful, most 3rd party heatsinks makers suck big times.

Go only for thermalright, zalman or coolermaster.

No, the fan is running fine, and has virtually no dust. It is a nice coolermaster fan, so im sure that it is not the problem. The motherboard is running at about 28c, which is pretty much normal. I also checked the v-core settings, but they are running at a regular 1.75 volts. The psu is an award 250watt, and since there arent any powerhungry components, the psu has more than enough power for it to draw from. My guess would be that the cpu is bad.

Maybe reconnect the heatsink on the cpu.

It might have gotten loosen, if you reconnect, make sure you put thermal paste again.

I already reconnected it. To the touch, the heatsink unit and cpu dont *seem* to be hitting 210f, Ive felt heatsinks hitting 160f and they felt hotter than this one. If the cpu is going out, the motherboard may be misreading its temperature. When i first began to service the pc, windows 98 reported it to be a k5 processor, of which i began summarily cursing at, but when i opened it up, it turned out to be a 1300 duron. Im not for sure whether it is the motherboard going out or the cpu.

If its stable , its not overheating.

My guess is the sensor is probably going bad. But since you said its freezing up, then it may be a heat issue. What other components are in your computer? Many times, if the comp is freezing, it may be a PSU problem. Also, you may want to try a BIOS update, that may fix the reading of the temps. I currently have a XP 2400+ with a Thermaltake Silent Boost and Artic Silver 5 running at a chilly 36 C idle, and 40 C under load. That Duron should not be that hot. Heck, most AMD cpu's with the stock cooler are around 55-65 C. At 99C, that CPU is gone burn up.

I believe you are using a thermistor that is mounted under the chip. If it is not making good contact with the chip, it could be missreading. You will have to find out, but I suspect that your freezing might be due to the board. (maybe it's freaking cause it thinks the chip is about to melt)
