I had posted a query and many people replied.
(see below). I changed settings to cable select.
Everything worked for a while and now I have
the same problem again. If the drive is failing,
then why would it start working if I perform
the sequence suggested by Dell? Thanks.

You don't need the card. Both being in the Cable Select position is proper.
ALL drives in the 4550 (and 8200) should be jumpered Cable Select.
I'd guess the drive is failing.
