Assuming you're talking about a DVD burner, ( because a DVDROM drive will read all formats anyway, and read and rip a dvd, because the software you use actually does the ripping from disk, to your hardrive), You're pretty much safe with a burner, that can burn All Formats(DVD-R/-RW, DVD+R/+RW, supporting the new burn rate of 8x, ( even though theres really no 8x media I've found on the market yet), and going with the cheapest brand name(IE; Sony, TDK, Plextor, Iomega, ETC. your preference), Prices really have dropped with DVD Burners, I saw a HP Burner the other day(Old Stock still on the shelf), For $149.00 US, that same Burner first hit the market at over $600.00 US.
Basically what I'm saying is the only things you need to consider to make your own decision is, Covered Formats, Burn Rate, and how much money you want to spend, Oh one other thing to consider is the burning software that comes with the burner, some come with NERO 6> Excellent burning software!!!
Hope this helps! Ryan
